Chapel Roan to literally light the stage at the 2024 MTV VMAs with an arrow of flame.
Chapel Lawn's transformative debut performance at the 2024 MTV VMAs is sure to be one to watch, and the Midwestern princess did not disappoint.
On the VMA stage on Wednesday, September 11, her recent hit “Good Luck, Babe!” the pop star channeled Joan of Arc for a theatrical, intricate, and awe-inspiring performance that literally set the stage on fire.
The singer of “HOT TO GO!” began her performance behind a massive gateway whose stage reminded one of an ancient castle. Wearing silver armor and chainmail, Roan marched to the front of the stage with a crossbow pierced with flaming arrows. He then fired the arrow at the stage, sending sparks flying and setting off the opening strains of “Good Luck, Babe!”
Singing on a stage decorated with “Red Wine Supernova” stars, she and her armor-clad dancers performed a lengthy fight sequence that featured swordplay and pyrotechnics. Eventually, she concentrated on singing the song's epic bridge as the battle unfolded around her, and the flames died down behind her, completing the song.
Over the past few months of her meteoric rise, Roan's extravagant costumes and themes have become a trademark, and the artist has stated that she drew inspiration from the drag community; the VMA has featured RuPaul's Drag Race Season 15 winner, Sasha Colby and introduced pop star Perframne. In her greeting, Colby called Roan “my daughter” and “your favorite drag queen favorite artist.”
Roan then dedicated her Best New Artist award to “all the drag artists who inspire me” and “the queer and trans people who fuel pop.” She added, “For all the queer kids in the Midwest who are watching right now. I am one of you. And don't let anyone tell you that you can't be who you want to be.”
Lorne appeared on the red carpet of the 2024 MTV VMAs in a medieval-themed outfit of a gorgeous naked dress by Y/Project, chainmail gloves, an oversized cross necklace, and silver dagger nails, hinting at a dramatic performance gave the audience a hint of the dramatic performance. She also had a kindly knight on deck to support her with her props: a large sword, an ornate vintage robe, and an antique rug.
Speaking to MTV on the carpet, Roan revealed that the robe was approximately 300 years old and the rug approximately 600 years old.
