Marie Claire and Bloomingdale's Bring Italy's Capri to Manhattan
My ideal celebration of turning 30 in October would look something like this: book a week-long trip to Capri, Italy. I would travel with close friends, drink fruity spritz, eat fresh pasta, wear only designer clothes by La Double J, Fendi, and Valentino, and always have a tote bag full of books worth reading.
All this fantasy came true during fashion week. On Tuesday, September 10, Marie Claire and Bloomingdale's extracted a wish list from southern Italy and held a joint birthday party to celebrate the 30th anniversary of Marie Claire's US edition and Bloomingdale's “From Italy with Love” fall campaign. ... party was held.
The evening began at Bloomingdale's 59th Street flagship store, where on the fourth floor in an exclusive area, Marie Claire editor-in-chief Nikki Ogunnaike and Bloomingdale's fashion director Janelle Lloyd exchanged fashion week stories, Olympian Jordan Childs, artist Paris Jackson, and actress Liza Soberano flipped through 30 years' worth of Marie Claire issues at the pop-up newsstand. (Audience favorites were Katie Holmes in the early 2000s and this fall's latest cover starring Halle Berry.) More than 150 fashion insiders, including J. Crew Creative Director Olympia Gayot and jewelry designer Jennifer Fisher, were on hand to discuss the new campaign, and tasted special cocktails inspired by the more than 150 Italian brands curated for the campaign. [With tiny eggplant parmesan and tomato tartare running around the venue, it was hard to believe this was a New York Fashion Week networking event. They then headed home with party favors that surpassed the usual cocktail napkins and matchboxes. Each guest received a classic little brown bag from Bloomsindale, filled with Hanky Panky and Mac Duggar goodies, plus a new Marie Claire book.
With only one part of the party worth attending, the evening continued with an intimate dinner at the family-owned Italian restaurant Isle of Capri. Around the corner from the Bloomingdale's flagship store, along with stylist Sara Slutsky, creator Tefi Pessoa, and designers Carly Cushnie and Gigi Bliss, “Real Housewives of New York” stars Jesselle Tank and Cy de Silva joined them in late summer Italian attire. Over red gingham tablecloths and lemon-accented centerpieces, 30 of the city's most influential women discussed fashion, art, and business in depth as drinks from 21Seeds and Amaro Montenegro played in the background. Tote bags embroidered with “Amore” were placed throughout the room, and vintage phone booths were strewn with flowers. [Before the meal was over, India Bradley, a dancer with the New York City Ballet, draped a “Ciao” knit sweater, a gift for every guest, over her shoulder, while guests in one corner exchanged phone numbers. By the time Ogannaike and Lloyd stood and toasted once more to the magazine's partnership with the department store, I would not have been surprised if some attendees were planning a girls' trip to Italy.
Of course, a room full of attention-seeking women in themed fashions would have been an even better alternative to having to fly.
