Taylor Swift's alien-inspired corset and miniskirt for the 2024 VMA after-party is a nod to her song “Down Bad.”

Taylor Swift is Down Bad, but it's not the kind of thing you cry about at the gym; at the 2024 VMAs, she took on the extraterrestrial theme of the Tortured Poets Department song, “Down Bad.” The singer wore not one, but two coordinating outfits printed with alien abduction scenes.

Swift walked the red carpet in a leather-strap tartan plaid corset before changing into a Monse crystalized mini-dress depicting the fourth encounter. It embodied her lyrics: “Did you really beam me up in a cloud of glittery dust just to experiment?”

After the show, Swift, who won a historic seventh crown, changed once more for the after-party. The pop star was photographed outside Electric Lady Studios wearing a more modest version of her sci-fi mini. Monse's corset, jacket, and pleated skirt were all made of the same UFO-patterned tapestry.

Styled by Joseph Cassel Falconer, the “fit” was finished off with $1,270 platform boots from Vivienne Westwood and a smattering of gold jewelry. Leather details, punkish jewelry, and glam-rock makeup harken back to the Reputation era, when Swift shed her American aesthetic for an edgy wardrobe centered on camouflage, leather, and snakes.

The VMAs will be Swift's first major red carpet appearance since the release of her new album at the Grammy Awards in February, and fans will get their first official look at her new fashion era beyond her dating and US Open outfits. And from the looks of last night's “Fit,” this is going to be her best one yet.
