Lucy Hale on why her alcoholism went “really dark” and the “rock bottom” that made her decide to get sober.

Lucy Hale is ready to divulge her incredibly inspiring journey to sobriety.

Actress Lucy Hale was presented with the 2024 Humanitarian Award by Friendly House, a Los Angeles-based organization that supports women in recovery from alcohol and drug abuse. In honor of this honor, she gave an interview to People in which she detailed her history of addiction and how she became sober at age 32.

“From an early age, I always felt alone and misunderstood,” Hale explained. 'When I was a teenager, I discovered alcohol. Things went well for a while, until it got really dark.”

The “Hate Game” star revealed that she tried to stay sober for a long time before she was able to completely abstain from alcohol.

“I relapsed for years and years, I relapsed again and again, I went dark again and again, and I literally, but figuratively, fell down again and again trying to find out what was going on in my life and why I was drinking.

For Hale, her acting career, especially the success of “Pretty Little Liars,” which ran from 2010 to 2017, was the “North Star” that gave her “purpose” through the dark times. “But while I was constantly in this cycle of extreme depression and anxiety, I had to show up to work and be on,” she said. That “being on” further fueled her drinking: ...... I was stuck in this cycle.”

Eventually, Hale hit “rock bottom” at age 32, where she said everything changed. She told People, “On the morning of January 2, 2022, I made the choice to do everything in my power to get sober.” 'I knew that if I didn't, I would lose everything I held dear. It was the scariest choice of my life, but also the greatest gift. When I made that choice, everything else changed. My whole life changed.”

The actress went on to emphasize that sobriety is still a daily choice and that the journey taught her to enjoy the everyday moments of life and to own her story and her truth.

Hale previously opened up about her sobriety during an appearance on “The Drew Barrymore Show” in January. Prior to that, he had revealed that he had been sober for a little over a year, starting in February 2023, but he did not go into much detail about his journey to get there.
