Kamala Harris, wearing a custom sequined gown, addresses the Congressional Black Caucus.

Vice President Kamala Harris has made a series of poignant fashion statements in her 2024 campaign.

Attending The Congressional Black Caucus Foundation's 53rd Annual Legislative Conference Annual Phoenix Awards Dinner at the Washington, D.C. Convention Center on Saturday, September 14, the Democratic presidential candidate wore an up-and-coming black She shined in a custom black sequin gown designed by designer LaQuan Smith.

The glittering, long-sleeved, floor-length gown sent a poignant message to the crowd gathered to honor an inspiring figure who has made significant contributions to American society.

“Given that the evening was intended to spotlight black excellence in all its forms, the choice was fitting, and the sparkling silhouette was formal yet celebratory,” wrote Christian Allaire of Vogue magazine

She added that Vice President Harris wore a “gold sequin button-down top” designed by Smith while enjoying Beyoncé's iconic Renaissance tour in Maryland last year.

The evening was just one of many campaign moments in which the presidential candidate used fashion to get his message across to voters.

At the historic Democratic National Convention (DNC), where Vice President Harris became the first black and South Asian woman to receive a major party's presidential nomination, the candidate wore a deep dark blue Chloe power suit that carried much meaning.

In what is called “color psychology,” dark blue can represent and evoke feelings of “tranquility and deep introspection.” It can also bring feelings of trust and credibility.

Vice President Harris' matching pussy-bow blouse also had historical and feminist significance: in the 1980s, it became a symbol of female power when Margaret Thatcher became the first female prime minister of the United Kingdom and adopted the pussy bow as a staple of her political image

The pussy bow was also used as a symbol of female power.

When Vice President Harris formally accepted the party's presidential nomination, attendees also sent a message in fashion: women (and some men) wore white in honor of the women's suffrage movement.

On the first night of the DNC, Vice President Harris made a surprise appearance, this time wearing a tan Chloe suit, designed by Creative Director Chemena Camara.

(Technically, her suit was a “coconut brown” color, which probably became her mega viral, “Did you think you fell off the coconut tree?”)

Harris also wore a set of pearls during the DNC, which she also wore to the 2021 vice presidential inauguration, a tribute to her sorority, Alpha Kappa Alpha.
