Reese Witherspoon Unleashes Nostalgic Old Hollywood Charm at the 2024 Emmys

It's hard to be biased about Reese Witherspoon, but let me tell you: Reese Witherspoon may have outdone herself with her 2024 Emmy Awards look styled by Petra Flannery. The actor and producer wore a black Dior strapless gown with gold flowers cascading down the bodice to the floor. Her hair was pulled back in a classic chignon, and her jewelry was kept simple with a diamond pendant choker.

Witherspoon is the executive producer for the limited series category of Big Little Lies, for which she has already won one Emmy. He is also nominated as a producer for Daisy Jones & the Six and Little Fires Everywhere. Tonight, however, she was nominated (again) in the Best Actress category for her portrayal of news anchor Bradley Jackson in the AppleTV+ series The Morning Show.

I loved the self-referential Elle Woods-esque look Reese Witherspoon wore to the 2022 Emmys - her first Best Actress nomination for her role as Bradley Jackson in the second season of The Morning Show. The former “Cruel Intentions” star wore a blue strapless Armani Privé column dress with a high slit and Tiffany jewelry. The column dress is a silhouette Witherspoon often wears on the red carpet. Stylist Petra Flannery explained in an interview with Porter in 2020 that she “usually opts for column dresses that are chic yet understated and complement her elegant figure.”

When Reese Witherspoon won her first award at the 2017 Emmy Awards for her executive producing role in HBO's Big Little Lies, she wore a Stella McCartney satin blue suit dress, black Christian Louboutin décolletage pumps, and diamond jewelry for the occasion. Given the rise of the no-pants trend, these looks seem curiously ahead of their time. She finished the look with a sleek blowout and orange-red lipstick.

Stylist Petra Flannery began working with Witherspoon after the actor's longtime stylist, Leslie Flemer, decided to scale back her client portfolio. And while her Southern style favors bright colors and patterns and is featured on her lifestyle and clothing label, Draper James, she takes a more subdued route on the red carpet.

“People do wear black to funerals,” she explained to the Wall Street Journal in 2015, shortly after the launch of Draper James.

“I never wore black at all when I was younger, and I was only allowed to buy my first pair of black pants when I was 15.”

“I'm a Southerner. I don't wear pitch black,'” Flemmer recalled Witherspoon saying in a 2014 WWD interview. 'Just once. You have an impact,'” she recalled of the one-shoulder Saint Laurent dress Witherspoon eventually wore to the premiere of ‘Wild’ at the Toronto Film Festival. Reese and I have completely opposite personal styles, but I appreciate that she knows who she is and what looks good on her. I just gave her a little push.” This year, she wore a floral-embroidered gown that evoked a nostalgic Old Hollywood sensibility.
