Megan Fahey's Naked Lace Moment is Method Dressing 2.0

Megan Fahey always intended to look like the leading lady at the premiere of Netflix's “The Perfect Couple.” What the Emmy-nominated actress was trying to do was not dress the part.

Fahey instead chose to more subtly portray the character of bridesmaid Merritt, who is in the middle of a serious murder case. She worked with stylist Thomas Carter Phillips to create the quintessential Victoria Beckham naked dress. The dress was a delicate, sheer black lace midi silhouette with a V-neck in the front and even less fabric in the back. It was a little femme fatale, a little boudoir, and a good representation of Merritt's psychology.

“The character I play is a woman with a really beautiful heart, which is misunderstood by some people,” Fahey told me over the phone a few hours before she wrapped herself in the dress proposal. 'She's on the board between being iconic to other people and how she feels about being herself. I wanted to honor her in this moment by dressing her in this beautiful, confident Victoria Beckham dress.”

One glance at the barely visible lace and it is clear that this is a film for women who are confident in who they are, both on and off the screen. (And as a tribute to the plot of The Perfect Couple, the total race number hits much harder than the seersucker of Nantucket Codes.) At the fitting with Phillips, he immediately recognized the dress.

“Megan and I were drawn to the complexity of this layered lace Victoria Beckham look,” her stylist told me. 'It's sexy and fun, and we thought it would be perfect for the premiere of our end-of-summer show.'

A dress this bold didn't need much emphasis in the beauty department. Before joining co-stars Nicole Kidman and Liev Schrieber on the red carpet, hairstylist Cameron Raines and makeup artist Jen Tioseco created a chic, minimalist The look was co-created by the two. (Fahi tells me that her team is always fired up for the carpet with a good playlist and good food.)

Bright, flushed cheeks, bold eyeliner, peachy nude lips, and a low bun with a hint of volume were all Fahy needed. 'I like my hair up,' she explains, 'because the open back of the dress is so inviting.' In other words, my personal taste is always really fresh and shiny.”

Fahey's beauty was closer to her everyday style than her lingerie-like dresses. On her days off, she is, she says, “a jeans and T-shirt girl. Classic colors and simple patterns were her style m.o.

But in a roundabout way, the simplicity of her dresses also resonated with her style north star. Victoria Beckham, she says, “speaks to me so much in terms of the classic simplicity of so much of her work.”

This time, the simplicity route had a greater impact. Fahey, who once played a fashion editor in “Bold Type,” says that it is only now that she is becoming more comfortable with the world of designers. It's something I thought I was very unfamiliar with for the last couple of years,” she explains. Her appearance at major premieres in Victoria Beckham's look is evidence of her growing confidence.

“It's a moment when, as an individual, I feel like I can take it a little easier, take a little more risks. 'A few years ago I wouldn't have been able to walk out the door in a dress like this. I would have been too nervous or something.”

Now Fahey didn't sound as though she was worried about big style swings. 'This beautiful piece feels so unique and singular and so different from anything I've ever worn before.' Spoken like a true protagonist.
