Thanks to Naomi Osaka, the bowling of tennis has officially begun.
For most of history, professional athletes have dressed for practicality rather than style. Fabrics have been chosen for their sweat-wicking properties, silhouettes have been chosen for their aerodynamics and athleticism. And while these things are still true, in recent years fashion has taken center stage (coats, to be exact).
Basketball's pre-game tunnel walk has become a fashion show, and Formula 1 stars are now considered style icons. Tennis has also become a sartorial spectacle, with A-list celebrities donning their best “old money” outfits for their box seats and stars like Serena Williams taking the court in designed looks rather than unconventional workout gear.
Naomi Osaka, a four-time Grand Slam singles champion this season, is one such player. So far, the player has competed twice at the 2024 US Open, and both times her outfit was unmistakably Saab; in her first match on August 27, Osaka wore a ruffled, brat-green tennis dress custom-made by AMBUSH designer Yoon Ahn.
