Kamala Harris, in a dark blue power suit, accepts the Democratic presidential nomination.

[Vice President Kamala Harris has been on the campaign trail for several weeks now, making appearances across the country, but had not formally accepted the Democratic Party's nomination for president until tonight.

On Thursday, August 22, Harris took the stage in Chicago for the 2024 Democratic National Convention (DNC), securing her role in the upcoming election. Harris' look, custom designed by Chloe Creative Director Chemena Kamali, consisted of a navy wool two-piece suit with a matching pussy bow blouse. Her choice of color may well tell the story of what the vice president, now the official Democratic presidential nominee, wanted to convey in delivering arguably the most important speech of her political career.

In what is called “color psychology,” dark blue can represent and evoke feelings of “tranquility and deep introspection.” It can also bring feelings of “trust” and “credibility” that Vice President Harris would want people to feel when he introduces himself to voters across the country.

Dark blue can also symbolize elegance, authority, and intelligence, which is why this color is often favored by those in positions of power.

The matching pussy-ribbon blouses of Democratic candidates also have historical and feminist significance after becoming an alternative to the suit and tie in the 60s and 70s, when women stepped out of the kitchen and into the corporate world In the 80s, Margaret Thatcher became the first female Prime Minister of Great Britain, adopted the pussybow as a staple of her political image, making it a symbol of female power.

Harris's political career was certainly a fashionable one. But after President Joe Biden stepped down and Harris stepped into the 2024 campaign earlier this summer, she has noticeably upped her fashion game.

Like many before her (and even the DNC crowd the night she received her party's nomination, which was a sea of white in honor of the women's suffrage movement), Harris is utilizing clothing to further her message.

For example, on the first day of the Democratic National Convention (DNC), Harris wore a tan Chloe suit designed by Creative Director Chemena Camara - technically, her suit was a “coconut brown” color, perhaps her wildly popular meme “coconut 's, and you think she fell out of the tree?

In addition to the pantsuit being a symbol of female empowerment in politics, her tan suit was also apparently a tribute to former President Barack Obama, whom Republicans infamously criticized for wearing khaki to a press conference.

Harris's pearls were another powerful fashion moment at the 2024 DNC, worn at major milestone moments from her first appearance at the DNC in 2024 to her inauguration as vice president in 2021, when her Howard University basement sorority, a tribute to Alpha Kappa Alpha.

Harris's run for the presidency has only just officially begun, but it is already something fashion historians and style code breakers will want to keep an eye on.
