Princess Kate wears preppy staples in surprise Olympic video.

The 2024 Summer Olympics is shaping up to be the fashion event of the year. Beyonce, Kendall Jenner, Ariana Grande, and other A-list celebrities represented their home country in patriotic fashion in Paris. Princess Kate joined that team yesterday, and of course she was cheering for Britain.

On August 11, the Crown Prince and Princess teamed up with Snoop Dogg and David Beckham to congratulate the GB team on their success. Kate Middleton made a rare appearance, saying, “Congratulations to Team GB from all of us watching at home.” The royals were dressed in coordinated blues, with Princess William in a preppy staple of an Adidas polo shirt and Kate in a Ralph Lauren Breton striped top. Princess Kate also showed off her new eternity ring in a short video.

If dressing was an Olympic event, Middleton would have already won several medals (for theme dressing and elevated basics). Her top was simple, preppy, and classic Kate, with a classic design of a wide boat neck, partially cut sleeves, and thin navy blue stripes. Her look itself, the striped boatneck Mariner T-shirt, costs $128 and is still available on Farfetch and Ralph Lauren's website (an Olympic miracle!). ...

Even a cursory glance at Kate Middleton's wardrobe catalog makes it clear that stripes are part of her style DNA. The princess has long relied on striped tops in a variety of colors, fabrics, and fits to anchor her traditional style. As a testament to the style's versatility, Middleton has worn this staple in a myriad of ways. He has layered stripes under utility jackets and blazers, or paired them with skinny jeans and nautical-inspired pants.

Princess Kate's Sunday tribute to Team GB is only the third piece she has worn in public this year. After revealing in private that she is undergoing treatment for cancer, the princess has been in public for the annual Trooping the Colour parade on June 15 (re-wearing Jenny Packham's white dress) and the Wimbledon tennis final in July (wearing Safiya's purple midi). She has been restricted.

The royal weekend outfit is a nod to the most familiar aspects of her wardrobe: relaxed, sophisticated, and easy to replicate at all price points. Shop more Princess Kate-inspired options below.
