What does Meghan Markle's Joanna Ortiz cut-and-sew dress worn on her Columbia tour show about fashion diplomacy?

After seven years of covering Meghan Markle's fashion, I've learned a lot about her tour outfits. She prefers minimal, neutral colors. She can pull off high-low combinations like a Ralph Lauren suit and Cartier jewelry, or a backless black St. Agni dress and sandal heels. When traveling abroad, she also does her research to ensure that she honors her hosts through her attire.

Case in point: Meghan Markle's second outfit of choice for touring Colombia with Prince Harry: the Duchess, who started Thursday, August 15, in a tailored vest trend courtesy of Veronica Beard and a white manicure paired with a Loro Piana bag, wore a Bogotá She changed into a cutout midi dress by Johanna Ortiz for the performance at the National Center for the Arts. Prince Harry also changed into a khaki suit and coordinating driving loafers.

Markle paired the dress with several familiar items from the royal wardrobe, including the Cartier necklace she wore in a CBS Sunday Morning interview earlier this month, a Cartier ring, and Jimmy Choo sandal heels. Her hair, which she had worn in a chignon in the morning, was let down, and loose waves were draped over her shoulders. But this second look for the Colombian tour meant more than sophisticated late-summer styling. (Thanks to her stylist, Jamie Mizrahi.)

Meghan Markle's dress was a sign of fashion diplomacy, a tactic the Duchess of Sussex knows well. This idea is summed up in respecting the host country by wearing local designers when traveling abroad. When visiting places as diverse as Canada, Australia, and Nigeria, Markle has historically paid close attention to local designers and worn the work of homegrown talent.

Designer Johanna Ortiz, who created Markle's vibrant dresses, is one of the biggest names in Colombian fashion. The label's dresses, swimwear, and resort wear feature bright, punchy prints and playful details, with occasional cutouts like those on the bodice of Markle's dress. According to the designer's website, her sustainability-focused label was founded in Cali, Colombia, in 2003. Ortiz has gained an international reputation and has retail partnerships with several global boutiques, but she chooses to run her business in her home country.

While wearing Colombian designers is an appropriate choice for her time in Bogota, this is not the first time Meghan Markle has worn the brand; in May, she wore another Johanna Ortiz design on her official tour of Nigeria with Prince Harry. At that time, she chose a sultry palm print dress with keyhole cutouts in the bodice and a not-so-large slit at the thigh

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry are settling into their four-day cultural visit and summit on online literacy and mental health advocacy, and we expect to see the two expanding their personal style horizons with a nod to the countries they visit. On her trip to Nigeria, Markle confessed her desire to experiment with more color in a red dress by Lagos-based designer Orire. The look for her second Colombian tour certainly seems to be an evolution of that idea.
