Princess Diana's butterfly earrings make a sentimental comeback in Meghan Markle's new Columbia attire
With the eyes of the world on her every move and tracking every garment she wears (guilty as sin), Meghan Markle's Colombia tour outfits could send mixed messages. On the second day of her trip, Meghan took the sentimental route of wearing her butterfly earrings again, in honor of the late Princess Diana.
On August 16, the second day of Meghan Markle's Colombian tour, the Sussexes visited Colegio La Giralda, an elementary school in Bogotá. The Duchess chose a classic outfit of black pants, blazer and button-up, and Chanel ballet shoes.
Her attire was the same as the easygoing attire she would wear to a dinner or selected engagement in Los Angeles, but her jewelry was special. The butterfly earrings that Princess Diana first wore on an official visit to Canada with then-Prince Charles in 1986 seem to be the axis of her jewelry. Markle also wore a Cartier tank watch, which was often seen on Princess Diana's wrist.
Princess Diana's butterfly earrings were set in gold and originally paired with a matching choker. She also wore a set of fluttering jewelry over a cobalt blue suit and matching hat. Today, Markle's styling has moved away from the match-match moment, instead mixing gold with neutral colors and coordinating with carefully selected pieces by Cartier.
A superficial reading of Meghan Markle's earrings would call them a fun choice for a school visit. The meaning is actually much deeper. Princess Diana was famously a kindergarten teacher before she married then-Prince Charles and assumed the title of royalty. The late Princess Diana had a deep appreciation for children and had a special bond with many of the children she met as an active royal. Her memorial statue at Kensington Palace depicts her standing with her three children.
Lady Meghan's decision to re-wear the earrings for the school visit is reminiscent of Lady Di's nurturing spirit and former presence in the classroom. It is also a symbol of rebirth, transformation, and hope, fitting for the three themes Markle discusses about shaping the minds of young people during her ongoing Columbia tour.
Of course, the Bogota itinerary is not the first time the Duchess of Sussex has returned Princess Diana's butterfly earrings to public view.
Meghan Markle debuted the butterfly earrings, a special gift from Prince Harry, in 2018, wearing them during the couple's official visit to Sydney, Australia. The jewelry was a touching addition to her debut outfit, which came on the heels of news that the Sussexes are expecting their first child together in public.
Both Meghan and Prince William's wife, Princess Kate, were gifted meaningful pieces from Princess Diana's archives for their wardrobes. Meghan Markle also wears a diamond tennis bracelet and an aquamarine ring previously owned by Prince Harry's mother for special occasions.
Markle also finds ways to indirectly reference Princess Diana through her wardrobe. She frequently carries the Lady Dior bag by Dior, named after the late Princess Diana. And on her trips to Colombia, Princess Meghan always wears a Cartier necklace with a history full of rebellious symbolism. A fitting choice, if not directly chosen as a tribute: both women are famous for challenging royal conventions in their own unique ways, in style and otherwise.
