Sabrina Carpenter mixes the pinup style and denim dress trends
Stars are already shedding their denim and getting a head start on fall fashion. This week, Zendaya showed off the same light-wash wide-leg jeans that Reese Witherspoon tried on the set of "The Morning Show" a few days ago. The week before that, Katie Holmes wore ultrawides. And now Sabrina Carpenter is test-driving another fall denim trend: denim dresses.
The singer spoke at the Grammy Museum in Los Angeles over the weekend with Jack Antonoff, wearing a form-fitting, midi-length, light-wash denim dress. The signature heart cutout, seen on many of Sabrina's onstage outfits, was on her chest and hips.
Denim dresses and skirt suits dominated the fall 2024 runways, including Schiaparelli, Carolina Herrera, Ulla Johnson, and Christian Dior. It's a refreshingly feminine departure from the Canadian tuxedo trend that dominated celebrity closets in the spring (see: Bella Hadid in Y2-inspired jeans-on-jeans, Beyoncé in her "Cowboy Carter" album cycle, seven different rotating Canadian tuxedo looks, Sydney Sweeney's preppy, ladylike twist on matching denim, etc.)
Carpenter's denim dress also has its roots in the fashion world's renewed interest in another fall trend: cutout detailing. Jil Sander's Spring/Summer 2024 collection included a black tunic with two gold-trimmed disc-shaped cutouts just above the chest. Alexander McQueen showed off the return of the keyhole neckline and an updated version of the cold shoulder sleeve. Blake Lively recently wore $19,000 Valentino jeans with floral cutouts on both legs
. [But cutouts are nothing new to Carpenter. With the help of stylist Jared Ellner, she has always tucked hearts up her sleeves (rather than her chest) for her concert looks, wearing mini dresses in a variety of colors with heart-shaped holes by Ukrainian brand Frolov. Carpenter's style can be described as cute and modern pin-up model. In the summer, she made a splash when she strutted down the catwalk at Vogue World in a set of red and white candy stripes and a matching vintage hair scarf, in a fashion reminiscent of the retro, nautical sirens.
Carpenter is preparing her next album, "Short N'Sweet," which will likely feature even more playful mini dresses. See below for items inspired by her latest look.
