Selena Gomez's custom manicure "muted red" shade, completed in 40 minutes.

There are more summer nail colors in the world than I can wrap my head around; OPI and Essie each boast more than 1,000 hues, covering every shade of the rainbow. But this week, when Selena Gomez sat in the chair of renowned nail artist Tom Bacic, a custom manicure was ordered.

The Only Murders in the Building star revealed via Instagram on Thursday, August 1, that her go-to nail professional spent 40 minutes creating the perfect "muted red" for her squoval (a combination of square and oval) shaped manicure She revealed that it took The shade is just between brick and maroon, with a gorgeous glossy topcoat adding a touch of sparkle.

To be honest, this crimson color is not the stereotypical summer nail polish trend. You're more likely to see something like Orange Julius nail polish or Haley Bieber's butter yellow polish this time of year. Deep red is traditionally a winter nail polish shade. But in recent weeks, a handful of celebrities have been trying to prove that maroon-colored nail polish is gaining traction.

Last week, Zendaya ignored the summer trend by sporting a maroon manicure while shopping in London. Sabrina Carpenter also debuted a rich cherry shade in honor of her new fragrance, Cherry Baby. And Cardi B (who just announced her third pregnancy and divorce) wore a similar shade for her just announced Marc Jacobs campaign.

This subdued shade of red initially surged last winter in the name of the Cherry Cola nail trend. Nail artist Nathalie Minerva previously told Marie Claire magazine, "It's a great way to bring in darker tones during the winter months while still respecting the old classic red."

The red is also a great way to add a touch of color to the nails.

If recent manicures like Selena Gomez's have taught us anything, it's that maroon nail surge is set to become an unlikely summer manicure trend. Be an early adopter and shop the look below.
