Beauty Trends for the 2010s

If you think back to the '10s, you will recall the explosion of social media-inspired beauty moments. Some of these trends, like matte makeup, easily evolved into the trends of today. However, with the benefit of hindsight, we can look back at the decade and pull out some of the trends that struck gold. For example,

let's say the trend of visible underwear wasn't your cup of tea. But let's get in the spirit of Haley Bieber's accessories: look at the fun sparkles in unexpected places, like the big studs on her ears. It's like a high-end version of a bedazzling.

The decade gave us a preview of a trend that would become quite prevalent in the 20s: dipping your toes into temporary hair color in a very pretty, natural red. Blake Lively also dyed her eyebrows, but if you don't want to go that far, it's optional.

The decade saw an explosion of nail art in really fun ways. Vanessa Hudgens has ombre bases, nail polish designs, and crystals to match her outfits. But if you want to simply elevate your regular mani, pick one or two of the three elements.

Looking back at the disappointing trends of the decade, the smoky-smoky-smoky eye may have been a bit much. The key to making it work is to dial it down a bit and emphasize the balance: if your eyeshadow and brows are strong, like this Cara Delevingne, you need a little more color on your lips.

Hair clips can bring joy to any outfit, but they tend to make you look a little younger (or straight out of the 90s). But they also tend to make you look a little younger (or like you just stepped out of the 90s). If that's the case, choose two or three clips and put them on one side of your head or on either side of your center part.

Miley Cyrus, Rihanna, and Kristen Stewart used their hair as a veritable canvas in the decade, leaning toward an edgy persona with wild hairstyles. Short on the sides and long on top, this slightly grown-out Mohawk is a bolder version of the pixie cut.

For those who may not be familiar, Ariana Grande's hair was very damaged from years of dying it red for her Nickelodeon show. The solution (extensive use of extensions and wearing her hair up high on her head) has become synonymous with her core look as a singer and actor, and is highly imitable.

Ah yes. Vanessa Hudgens, with her dark-colored top of hair and an ombre effect through the ends, is a good example of this trend, which was a big hit in the '10s. A milder version looks more classic, meaning there is no need to go from deep brown to bleach blonde.

The 10s took the beauty trends of the 90s and revitalized them, so matte blush, eyeshadow, and lip colors are back. If you like matte makeup, you can wear it every day.

Like its half-sister, the extreme smokey eye, the intense cat eye has been all the rage this decade. Extreme makeup isn't going anywhere soon (there were even more extreme iterations of euphoria-esque eye makeup in the 20s), but if you want to make it an everyday thing, start small and see how long you can keep it going before it starts looking extreme.

The "wet hair" look has always been seen as bold, being just a few degrees away from the dreaded "crumpled" effect. Ciara wisely doesn't go overboard here, applying gel to the waves and letting them dry naturally. If you want to copy her, try a little at a time.

Our eyebrows were big in the teens and we were proud of them. Seriously, having nice bushy eyebrows is a reprieve from the "thin brow" fad. If your brows are still a bit sparse and you don't want to use an eyebrow serum, there are plenty of pomades and pencils to help fill them in.

Technically this would be a "mob" (mullet + long bob), but short bangs and backward flowing layers were all the rage in the decade. Taylor Swift has done well by making this cut casual rather than extreme. If you want to step into this trend, use clip-on bangs and lots of layers.

Stars walking the red carpet were bronzed, including Gigi Hadid. Hadid looks great, especially in yellow for contrast, but depending on your own skin tone, you may want to use a little less sunscreen.

Light eyeshadow on the eyelids and dark eyeshadow "cut" from the middle crease of the eyelid to the top of the brow bone can make the eyes appear larger and more striking. The key is to blend it in casually, rather than to the extreme, as Rihanna does.

If you want to make your lips look bigger (but don't rely on lip fillers, another big trend of the decade), overline your lips: use a lip pencil to draw "above" the natural lip line and fill in your lips with lipstick or gloss. Be as subtle as Kendall Jenner's.

Use a lip pencil to draw over the lip line.

False eyelashes got a major upgrade in the decade, making them bigger, bolder, and easier to apply. Jennifer Lopez, who loves beauty trends, pioneered the bold lash look.

Kate Middleton's big, bouncy, loosely curled hair actually has a name (Chelsea Blow Dry), and the royal family made it very popular at her countless royal functions in the decade. If you want to style your hair in a more modern iteration, curl the ends a little less and break up the uniformity.

Kate Moss offered festival fashion in the 00s, but the Coachella-going look was popular in the 10s. Emma Roberts' formal version of a half-up with a delicate sprinkling of fake buds and pearls is still a great way to embrace the trend.

Going out with your best friend in matching outfits is not an invention of the decade. Taylor Swift, in particular, has found new ways to show her friends that they are part of her "squad," including matching crimped hair and bangs.

Fantastic love of colorful eyeshadow. (Frankly, colorful eye makeup is never a bad decision - as ever, the goal is to balance the face, and that might mean a bold lip.

Victoria's Secret fashion shows began in the 90s, but the "beach hair" trend took off in the 10s. Blonde with highlights, sprayed on volume, and a little wave on the body.

Contouring was not necessarily our friend in the decade. But don't be afraid to contour in general. Carla Gugino's cheek contouring is a perfect example.

First, Gisele Bundchen's hair clip is lovely. Second, I love that she even does her own makeup for the shoot. Third, even though she is obviously wearing foundation and blush, it looks so natural that you can't really tell. However, you don't have to be a supermodel to wear "no-makeup" makeup, and it is a timeless beauty style.

Long before "ear scapes" became fashionable (i.e., lots of piercings to leaf a cool, thoughtful aesthetic), celebrities pioneered it. This ScarJo pioneered the "red carpet with tons of piercings" vibe. If you'd like to try it, but not with this much intensity, ...... If so, try adding some ear cuffs.

The "glass skin" effect originated as a K-beauty trend and quickly caught on in the US. -The reason is that it makes the skin glowing and radiant. The reason for this is because it makes the skin glowing and radiant. Whether or not you achieve that depends on your skin, but a good place to start is with a highlighter and a shiny foundation.

Red carpet stars love to play with hair color, and the decade has upped the ante with colorful shades. Helen Mirren shows us that you don't have to be young to try cool new hair colors (and that temporary hair dye is surprisingly easy to apply).

Lana Del Rey was tackling gothic before it was trendy for us, with lip colors ranging from matte beige and bright red to black. This deep wine color (almost identical to her red hair) is very easy to imitate.

There is an ongoing debate as to whether the side part or the center part is more dominant, and younger generations often favor the latter, but the center part was not born in the 20s. In fact, a center part can make the face appear longer and more symmetrical (as Kendall Jenner is showing here) and can hide thinning hair and hair loss. [Sienna Miller's piecey lob (long bob) is not the shortest haircut she's ever done for us, but it is an example of a great short cut that fits many face shapes.

The "messy bun" (meaning hair that is fairly styled but still looks a bit casual and undone) was popularized by Meghan Markle: even on formal outings, she still had pieces out of her updo. It's a great style, but it requires more styling than expected. You have to pull the hair out of the updo before you can pull it out.

Our queen, Rihanna, founded Fenty Beauty in 2017. And we are so grateful that she did so - in addition to her products being top-notch, she also deliberately chose a wide range of colors in her foundation and concealer to accommodate more skin tones. Being able to find the perfect shade for you is priceless.
