Fashion Girls Are Destined to Wear the J.Crew x Maryam Nassir Zadeh Collaboration on Vacation

New York designer Maryam Nassir Zadeh holds a special place in the hearts of fashion girls. Her clothes, with their sheer fabrics and flirty, figure-hugging silhouettes, are both sexy and sincere; her basics, from tiny bows on T-shirts to full-back tank tops, are never basic but playful. And her colorful oversized scrunchies have been worn in ponytails and low buns at New York Fashion Week.

Now the item that made Maryam Nassir Zadeh (Maryam Nassir Zadeh, or MNZ to her fans, her self-named label) a cult hit is about to enter the mainstream in the form of a vacation-appropriate capsule. The designer has teamed up with J.Crew to present a lineup of staple pieces to wear in the sun. [The J.Crew x Maryam Nassir Zadeh collaboration, like J.Crew's capsules with New York jewelry label Catbird and Ukrainian designer Anna October, takes the best of J.Crew's independent brands and puts them in a new Whether you're a J.Crew loyalist or one of the aforementioned fashion girls, you'll find something to keep in your carry-on. There's a peek-a-boo mesh bag, a polka-dot ruffled bikini (with a matching slip dress), breezy linen pants, and a fan-favorite scrunchie, plus two oversized floral hair clips.

Maryam Nassir Zadeh (designer) says her designs and those of J.Crew, headed by womenswear designer Olympia Gayot, are more similar than they appear. Timelessness, casualness, and a penchant for the classics are its foundation. He says, “I love clean, minimalist classics, but I also love the use of texture and embellishment.

It's not hard to imagine longtime fans of the brand packing these pieces for a weekend in southern Spain and then re-styling them into chic, worn-down urban errand clothes. It's a testament to the sunny campaign images and the collaboration that balances MNZ's intellectual DNA with J. Crew's signature prints.

“The collection is very MNZ-esque, but also prestigious because it is so well made production-wise,” says Zadeh.

“The collection feels powerful as opposed to the ethereal feel of MNZ's signature pieces.”

Of course, when Mariam Nasir Zadeh worked with Gayot on the collection, it wasn't just the regular customers of the downtown flagship store that she had in mind. She also had potential new fans in mind.

“What I want to hear from shoppers who see me for the first time through this collection is that they appreciate that designers who are called niche or indie have a strong perspective and voice in reaching the culture and the masses. Like-minded brands, large and small, working together creatively as a force for beauty together,” she says. In doing so, some of our shoppers will be transformed into full-time fashion girls wearing scrunchies and the like.”
