Jennifer Lawrence Revives Long-Lost Sneaker Trend at Wimbledon White Set

Jennifer Lawrence may not be in London for Wimbledon, but she may have dressed head-to-toe in white and sent out the tennis spirit from thousands of miles away. At the same time, she may have signed the sneaker trend for the first time in years.

On Thursday, July 11, Jennifer Lawrence strolled through Manhattan and prepared for the city's 90-degree heat in a slightly oversized white button-up shirt. The actress took off her top and rolled up the sleeves to her elbows for a relaxed fit. She paired the shirt with matching white micro mini shorts from The Row.

She completed her afternoon look with a sage green Menemsha Fish Market cap, brown tortoise Luv Lou sunglasses, and a black quilted leather Bottega Veneta shoulder bag.

And then there was the return of the long lost sneaker trend. Lawrence added a pop of color to her minimalist outfit with a pair of chunky multicolor New Balance x Emme Leon d'Or 1906R Jade sneakers, which she paired with white Polo Ralph Lauren crew socks.

Lawrence's recent "fit" is the epitome of Wimbledon White, and her choice of 2010s-inspired chunky shoes (often referred to as dud sneakers) is in line with a growing movement on the 2024 trend radar. This ever-evolving silhouette has undergone a bit of a transformation since its return in 2018 (remember Balenciaga's Triple S?). And now the sneaker is returning to its sporty, papercore roots.

With the rise of styles like the Adidas Samba and Onitsuka Tiger Mexico 66, celebrities are also finding a place for these bulky shoes in their wardrobes once again. Whether it's New Balance or other legacy shoe brands, stars like Jennifer Lopez, Katie Holmes, Suki Waterhouse, and Anne Hathaway have already approved of the once controversial (but now essential) sneaker in their off-duty outfits

Mesh.

From mesh flats to comfortable slippers and jelly sandals, Jennifer Lawrence is always on top of shoe trends. Her love of comfortable platform kicks was evident in her street style the day before.

On Wednesday, July 10, the 33-year-old embraced the trend with The Row's Bonnie Leather sneakers, styled with an oversized Leset shacket and relaxed drawstring pants.

It's hard to believe that Jennifer Lawrence actually skipped Wimbledon to walk the sultry streets of New York, but her all-white outfit may be a prelude to the U.S. Open coming up in a few weeks. Whether watching a tennis match or strolling around town, Lawrence's outfit is at least a reminder of the endless versatility of chunky dad sneakers.
