Read MoreLast summer, Greta Gerwig's "Barbie" reminded audiences that dolls and the people who play with them can be anything. Star Kate McKinnon wore a custom magenta suit by Daniela Kallmeyer with a "Gay Barbie" patch on the inside.
"It went a little viral, and lesbian tweeters joked that this Gay Barbie patch drove them crazy," Kallmeyer, a queer designer with a loyal following on the New York fashion scene, recalled by phone with me almost a year later. Kate, who broke the stereotype of Barbie as the perfect woman and played this unexpected and unconventional character, was a particularly coming out and proud actor, which says a lot about what I believe." And I got pretty emotional about it.
A year later, McKinnon's monumental suit returns to Barbie Land in a different form. Daniela Kallmeyer partnered with Barbie Style (an editorial project showcasing Barbie high fashion) to create four doll-sized versions of Kallmeyer's best-known pieces for Pride. The Barbie dolls will be auctioned off after Kallmeyer's look is modeled on Instagram in a scaled-down replica of Kallmeyer's New York store, with proceeds going to the LGBTQ advocacy group GLAAD.
McKinnon's custom-made pink suit was just the beginning of what the tiniest new member of Café Kallmeyer would wear. Kallmeyer (the designer) also wanted her four dolls to represent what pride and queerness look like in an everyday (and overdressed) context beyond the red carpet.
"We wanted to represent a version of Kallmeyer that really speaks to what this celebration is about, but we also believe that there is more than one way to look, feel, and act as queer," says the designer.
"Extracting pieces and looks from my perspective as a queer designer and just styling them honestly has become a hallmark of the Kallmeyer brand."
One look is modeled on Daniela herself and features three of Kallmeyer's black-tie pieces. The other two pieces are casual yet tailored classics, such as denim and trench coats. Says Kallmeyer, "You should feel your best self, and even when you're at your most dressed down, you should feel gay, sexy, and powerful."
Denim on Denim's Barbie ties in with the designer's in-house Pride campaign. She is wearing a pair of black Kallmeyer boxers, available online this month, peeking out from under the waistband of her jeans. Whether in miniature form or for brand loyalists, the item is "meant to make you feel great from the inside out."
Given that there are four dolls up for auction, this collection is not meant to bring a queer-coded Barbie to every home. (Note to Mattel: think about it for next year.) It's about showing the range of clothes Barbie can wear and the range of people she can become. Says Kallmeyer, "It's a cultural moment for me to be able to instill public awareness of my queerness-inspired signature tie shirts, vest looks, slouchy jeans showing boxers, etc., and I'm so honored to be a part of it."
"My hope is that all of these looks are equally impactful and iconic, not only for the fact that it's new for a big brand like Mattel to do something so proud, but that someone gets a piece of history," the designer added.
"And the designer adds.
The auction for all four Kallmeyer Barbies will close on July 5. No matter how much is collected, the designer has already accomplished something special for himself and the brand's community." Who wouldn't want their designs to be brought to life in something as iconic as Barbie?
