Read MoreParis Couture Fashion Week is underway, and today, Tuesday, June 25, Chanel brought its latest collection to the Palais Garnier in Paris (one step away from the usual Grand Palais Ephemera). All eyes are on what Chanel will bring to the couture table: the departure of former creative director Virginie Viard made fashion news just a few weeks ago, and speculation is still swirling as to who will replace her
.
Still, the show is still in the spotlight.
Still, the show went on, and the French fashion house held its first show since the announcement. Invited to the glamorous front row were friends of the brand, who showed up in Chanel-esque uniforms - lots of tweed, matching sets, and a ribbon or two. Topping the guest list was supermodel and longtime collaborator Naomi Campbell, who gave a very casual (and surprising) update to the Chanel co-ord with sneakers.
The 54-year-old was photographed at the show in a silver set (from Chanel, of course) with sequins all over her body. Campbell's glittering ensemble included a cropped button-up jacket and a high-waisted midi skirt that hit at the knee. With the help of regular stylist Lo Roach, Campbell wore Chanel closed-toe kitten pumps and diamond-studded jewelry, including bijoux bracelets and dangling Chanel "CC" earrings.
But as soon as Campbell arrived at the Hôtel Ritz, she gave the Chanel look a subtle makeover. She swapped her classic heels for purple and white Air Jordan high-top sneakers. Even the supermodel, known for strutting around in heels all day, knows that the key to comfort, fashion week or not, lies in a trusty pair of sneakers.
There is always a "new" sneaker at the top of the trend cycle. For decades, the Air Jordan has been a must-have for everyone from style stars to athletes. The Adidas Samba and Onitsuka Tiger Mexico 66 may be having a moment right now, but Campbell is a bona fide trendsetter, and she may be suggesting that the beloved shoes are coming back for a high-fashion revival.
Campbell's appearance at Fashion Week follows news of an exhibition at the V&A Museum in London, the first of its kind dedicated to models. Curated by former British Vogue editor-in-chief Edward Enninful, the "Naomi: In Fashion" exhibition will address her career, influences, and activism over the years.
As a world-renowned model, globetrotter, and mother of two, Campbell is busy with bookings, but she never misses an opportunity for street style at Fashion Week. Get a head start on the matching silver set, inspired by Naomi Campbell's Chanel look at Paris Couture Fashion Week, which can be worn with both heels and sneakers.
