At Paris Couture Fashion Week, Every French Girl Wears a Smart Summer Updo
I am unashamedly devoted to the French beauty aesthetic. A trip to Paris, especially during times like Couture Fashion Week, or a survey of social media pockets of #frenchgirlbeauty, will prove why. Parisians have mastered the art of looking sophisticated with little effort. The French glamour has always been clean and elegant," beauty pro Dani Parks tells us. They use the bare minimum of products, but still look put together. A walk down the Champs-Élysées is a perfect example of this trait. Red lips, no foundation, shaggy bangs, air-dried waves, and freakishly prominent freckles (fake or not).
But at the height of Paris Couture Week, a new beauty trend emerged that French girls recognized. The easiest, most laid-back kind of updo appeared on all hair types and lengths. Hairstylist Deanna Sardillan says, "The trend is toward braided bun hair swept back or tussled ponytails, with accessories added to detail the style. A messy chignon with curtained bangs is simple yet impactful and sexy."
While heading to Schiaparelli, Balenciaga, and Dior, fashion girls filled the streets and provided endless summer hair inspiration. Given the heat, a quick off-the-neck hairstyle is a practical decision. But these French girl updos also allow for an infusion of personal style. Low-hanging chignons were embellished with floral appliqués. Pearls were attached to barrettes and adorned the half-up hairstyles. Heavy bangs complemented the Ariana Grande-style ponytail.

A low braided chignon with clipped bows injects a girlie aesthetic into a simple back bang. It goes perfectly with the frilly accessories. For a sleek bun, I often use Got2b gel and hairspray," says Sardillan. And with small rubber bands, it's very easy to do."
We've seen the "clean girl" style of center-parted, slicked-back bun hairstyles, but for Paris Couture Week, the straight-back bun seems to be gaining traction. This style also works well with bang hairstyles. Simply apply a volumizing hairspray to the bangs and pull the rest of the hair into a chignon.
One of my personal favorite up-do inspirations that originated in Paris is the ballerina bun with lots of accessories. Not only is it incredibly easy to recreate (just use scrunchies and floral pins), but it instantly elevates an otherwise modest outfit.
I've lived with my hair down my whole life. Half up, half down hairstyles are here to stay. Sweep all hair above the ears back into a bun or ponytail. It's an easy way to get on trend (and keep hair out of your face) without having to stick to an updo.
You can recreate this Parisienne hairstyle with just hair gel and a ponytail. It is suitable for all hair types and lengths and is easy to arrange to your liking. Add a small bow, barrette, headband, or ribbon.
The zigzag parting and swirled edges are a stylish combination. To create this style, you'll need heavy-duty hair gel and a boar bristle brush. However, once you have the tools, it is surprisingly easy to put together.
