Vintage Old Hollywood hair scarves are the celebrity accessory trend this summer

Earlier this week, pop star Sabrina Carpenter walked the runway at Place Vendôme in Paris looking as if she had just stepped out of a time machine. Her Jacums striped Mayotte and wrap skirt were only half of the comparison (to use a more sophisticated term for the meme) to the cartoon pinups of the 40s. What really appealed to vintage lovers was the "Please Please Please" singer's Old Hollywood hair scarf, tied under her bouncy curls and chin. It was a hair accessory made for basking in the St. Tropez sun. It was a hair accessory made for staring at waiters in seaside cafes and looking through the bridge of sharp cat-eye sunglasses. It was also a sign of the latest trend in luxury summer accessories.

Celebrities turned to vintage (or vintage-inspired) scarves as their must-pack hair accessory for the start of the sun-soaked season on yachts, i.e., summer. In Majorca, Kendall Jenner wrapped her dark brown hair in a floral scarf that highlighted her tinny string bikini and oval sunglasses. Back in the U.S., Beyoncé sipped rosé on a boat in the Hamptons in a tiny white dress, white hair scarf, and white Miu Miu sunglasses. In between trips, stars like Kaia Gerber and Olivia Rodrigo tied floral or dotted bandanas over their hair or under their chins, glamorously keeping a low profile. Carpenter also wore the same accessory in the music video for her hit song "Espresso," paired with a matching swimsuit, just as she did when she walked the Paris runway.

There is a bit of function in folding a scarf diagonally and securing it over a low bun or loose curls. But this is a hair moment that gives off an aura of luxury rather than a tousled bun. Forget baseball caps and simple headbands: these do the same job, but in a regal way, and I think my colleagues at Marie Claire speak for everyone when they responded to this photo by saying, "This vibe is perfect."

In a way, this trend harkens back to the golden age of Hollywood travel style. Before celebrities jet-set in Aloyoga leggings and Emi Jay nail clips, they were protecting their hair from the wind with tightly tied silk scarves on the Pacific Coast Highway and in the corridors leading to Pan Am flights. Stars of the 50s and 60s such as Audrey Hepburn, Katharine Hepburn, Sophia Loren, and Joan Collins were always photographed wearing modest scarves like those now worn by Dua Lipa and Lana Del Rey. In both eras, they matched sharp cat-eye sunglasses and adopted a slightly aloof demeanor.

Flash forward to the present: printed patterns and silk scarves don't just appear on celebrity vacation Instagrams. Alongside French girl updos, especially from Couture Week, they are elevating simple summer outfits like T-shirts and slip skirts into candy-like off-the-shoulder dresses. Some have Hermes tags, others are Etsy finds for under $20. And on TikTok, a number of intrepid hair-fluencers are showing us how to tie those knots.

The real beauty of tying an Old Hollywood hair scarf is that wherever you wear it, it instantly becomes a glamorous hairstyle. But invite me over next time you plan to tie back your silk hair on the bow of your yacht docked in Montauk.
