Julia Fox opens up about celibacy, her ex-career and how motherhood has changed her
Welcome to the wonderful talk hosted by Marie Claire Editor-in-chief Nicki Ogunnaike. Every week, Nikki sits down with attractive women — entertainers, entrepreneurs, creators, athletes, and changemakers — to discuss money, power, and style. "Well-behaved" women have long been discouraged from talking about these topics - style should be effortless, and conversations about money and power should not be "appropriate," "demure," or "nice.""But the definition of Nikki's lovely story is one that all parties walk away feeling empowered. You can hear a nice story with Nikki Ogunnaike on Apple Podcast and Spotify.
Julia Fox swore sex — and she feels all the better for it.
Down the Drain, actress and author of best-selling memoirs, focused more on herself in Marie Claire's podcast "Nice Talk" and revealed about her journey to being a great mother for her 3-year-old son Valentino. This included rethinking her values about sex and money.
Fox has abstained from sex for more than 2 and a half years, but her choice is ultimately "the result of men's repeated behavior."
"Women are tired," she says, noting that others who were similarly committed to celibacy reached out to her. "They said, "I want more women to understand how great it is to do this by not engaging with men that way.
E.OMG Fashun's host said, "In a way, it's a shame that this is where we got it.
Fox's abstinence began when she felt she "ended up with men" after she gave dating her "best shot." But after Roe v. Wade was overturned in 2022-6, she turned abstinence into what she described as a "subtle rebellion."
"Why would I lie down with someone who will never stand up for me'These men, they are not angry," she says. "I'm not saying that all men support a ban on abortion, but most men don't actually say anything about it. And I just feel like f---it.
While Fox is open to meeting someone and falling in love, she says she's focused on raising a son and building her career because she needs to "build a lot of trust" and "set in a potential new relationship" anytime soon.
Multi-Hyphenate follows the release of the 2019 hit Uncut Gem, from Downtown New York personalities and artists, a-Lister and Fa, but in recent years, Fox has reconsidered the value she puts on money.
"My only goal is to provide a great life for my son. If I have enough money to do it, that's really all I need. I just spend money on my son," Fox, who surprised fans by posting a video on tiktok, highlights her humble apartment setup.
In the past, Fox says, she would flaunt her wealth through design bags and luxury cars, but realized it came from a place to "put those things on a pedestal and allow those things to define [her] self-worth."
"It's all psychological and it feels like there's nothing to prove," Fox adds. "I have nothing to prove in that field. I'm not trying to be the richest person in the room.
When she welcomed Valentino in early 2021 and began raising him as a single mother, her mindset changed. "I think it probably had something to do with motherhood and becoming a single mother [when I started] re-adjusting my values and really understanding what was important, what wasn't important, what was fair and what was unfair," she reveals. "Every person in the world comes from a woman. But still, we are treated like second-class, consumerist citizens. We are not given the flowers that we rightfully deserve," Fox says. "I feel like they are my mission now: to talk about something like this, to shine a light on it, to make people wake up, to get rid of blindness." Everyone is conditioned to want a nice car and a nice watch, so they are not, as if those things are trying to make them happy.
