Rohde's first blush is finally available, and the "Marie Claire" editorial team first tests all six colors.
Rohde's first blush may have been the beauty world's worst kept secret. Even before the Haley Bieber-founded brand officially revealed that the waiting list for Rohde's Pocket Blush, a Polly Pocket-sized cream stick in a range of six colors, would open today, TikTok and Instagram were casually flooded The crowd was. Mega-influencers like Matilda Jelf and Alix Earle wore baby pink tubes on their cheeks in a video reposted by Lorde's official account.
Even Bieber shared the "cheek peek" of Rohde's blush online a few weeks ago. (The product was in development longer than that: Bieber told Vogue magazine that it took two years to arrive at the final formula.) She first dropped the tube in an Instagram roundup scene of casual maternity wear, then tapped the coral pink shade on her cheekbones in "Get Ready With Me," shot from the front seat of her car. The more I watched the video, the more I found myself fantasizing about using the Rohde blush before I got it myself. Bieber and her testers seemed to enjoy the process of applying the blush, and the shades were naturally pigmented. I wasn't the only one eager to try it: "My bank account is ready," several commenters wrote on Bieber's post.
To be fair, Roadblush is the kind of announcement I would have a hard time keeping quiet about if I were a beauty founder. Starting with skincare-oriented products like Peptide Lip Treatment, plus a viral cell phone case to display them, Lorde Blush has made its official entry into the vast (and crowded) world of cosmetics. From the recently revamped NARS blush to Glossier's Cloud Paint blush, Beaver's six buildable colors have plenty of competition. But with the rosy, sun-kissed, and fresh-off-the-soccer-pitch blush trend already dominating summer, her timing couldn't be better.
Rohde's pocket blushes will be available for order on Thursday, June 20 for $24 each. Now that it's official, the waiting list is open, and the countdown has begun, we can also reveal that Marie Claire's editors tested all six shades before anyone else. We'll go ahead and explain exactly what to expect from each loaded pocket blush, our first impressions after trying them all, and whether or not they'll earn a "best blush" rating worthy of the inevitably crowded waiting list. Short answer: absolutely, yes.
The name tells you almost everything you need to know. Rohde's Pocket Blush is a miniature cream stick ideal for keeping up with the summer blush trend on the go, whether you're heading to a beachside bar or a three-hour concert in an outdoor arena. Six shades are available for pre-order, ranging from bubblegum coquette pink (Piggy) to deep terracotta (Toast Teddy). They all come in a small, cylindrical applicator that fits in a pocket.
Like Rohde's best-selling Peptide Lip Treatment and Glazing Milk, the blush formulas are vegan and dermatologist tested. They are also cruelty-free and fragrance-free. Rohde claims that with "long-wear" and "buildable coverage," your flush will stay there all morning and all day. (It's also supposed to soften skin while providing a flirtatious blush.)
That's a lot of promises for a Tinkerbell-sized product, and of course Marie Claire's editors wanted to make good on each claim.
Samantha tested which loaded blush: Juice Box, a dark pink blush
Samantha's honest review: "I am a big blush girl and always have been. I have pink undertones and wear pink-toned blush, eyeshadow, and lipstick all the time. When samples of Rohde's new blush arrived at the Marie Claire office, I couldn't wait to explore the bag and pick out the most rosy shade. I chose the hot pink Juice Box. The pigmentation was amazingly striking. A small swipe on the cheeks creates a flush of pink that reminds one of time spent in the cold. I also applied small dots on my eyelids and a dab on my lips for a rode-in look. The finish is not too shiny and has a soft, dewy glow. I apply it heavier in the mornings, as the intensity of the product diminishes a bit during the day."
Which Rohde Blush has Ashlyn tested? Toast Teddy, Terracotta Blush
Ashlyn's honest review: "Another day, another Rohde product I am totally smitten with. First, let's talk about the packaging. Very sleek and simple design, easy to travel with. The applicator allowed me to glide the product on without any mess. The blush itself is creamy. Creamier than I expected. The color I swatched was Toasted Teddy, which I was a little skeptical of because it is a darker blush for my medium brown skin tone, but to my surprise it was perfect for my cheese and lips. This terracotta is perfect for a tan effect, which is my favorite. It gives a tanned glow that I think any brown girl would enjoy. Haley, you've done it again".
Which Rohde blush did Emma test: spicy marg, bright coral blush
Emma's honest review: "Having naturally reddish skin, I have always approached blush with hesitation. (My fears were heightened after being lobstered with over-pigmented rosy powder.) So, as always, I looked with trepidation at Rohde's Pocket Blush in Spicy Marg. Would Haley Beaver's latest product make my cheeks flush as fiercely as if I had overdosed on the cocktail named after it?
"First I dabbed it on my fingers and carefully applied it to my cheekbones and temples. Despite how saturated the blush looked with its applicator, I was pleasantly surprised by the gentle color payoff on my skin that gave me control to build the blush to my satisfaction. The texture of the formula is buttery and blends without leaving an uncomfortable stickiness on the cheeks. Even eight hours after application, the blush did not blot or fade, and my complexion remained rosy throughout the day. I was completely impressed.
"I never thought it would turn out this way: Miss Beaver, you have turned me into a blush girl. I expect to see you sipping blush this summer while wearing spicy marg blush, too."
"I'm so glad I did.
Which Rohde blush did Lauren test: fleckle, neutral peach blush
Lauren's honest review: "I am a Rohde devotee (my daily skin care routine is not complete without the brand's glazing fluid milk and peptide lip treatment is not complete without), so I was beyond excited to get my hands on the new Pocket Blush. Warm pink tends to complement my skin tone, so I tried the freckle shade, which gives me nice, sun-kissed skin. Rubbing it lightly on my cheeks, I noticed that the smooth (and slightly creamy) consistency allowed for seamless application. The blush also had a pleasant lightness to it, ideal for me, as I have a problem with makeup breakouts. But most of all, I liked the fact that the pigment held up all day (no need to reapply)."
Which Rohde blush Harry tested: the baby pink blush "Piggy" (above) and the soft mauve blush "Sleepy Girl" (below): "Rohde's Pocket Blush is perfect for my pale, sensitive, breakout-prone skin. It doesn't have a pungent scent, and it contains peptides, which softened my cheeks after a few days of continuous use.
"I started my blush test with Piggy: a bubblegum pink shade that belongs on the coquette core mood board. This is a capital P pink and when swatched on the hand it looked highly pigmented. I was able to blend it out with a few taps on each side of my cheek, but personally I still found it a bit too bright for everyday use. I felt more comfortable packing it for a weekend outdoor wedding: the shade felt just right with my garden party-esque floral dress, and the tube took up little room in my (already cramped) evening clutch bag."
"Sleepy Girl Soft Mauve was more my speed. The shade reminded me of Charlotte Tilbury's Pillow Talk line (another of my perennial favorites), but with more flexible and buildable pigments. I wore it on both my cheeks and lips for a week in the office. After a few cups of coffee, I had to reapply the lip area, but my complexion remained faintly rosy from the moment I sat down at my desk until I got home.
"I may already have a tube, but I'm signing up for the waiting list anyway. I'm so impressed with this blush, I have a feeling it will be gone soon."
