Rihanna confesses that she "never expected" postpartum hair loss to affect her.
Even Fenty Beauty powerhouse, multi-platinum artist, and fan of luxury dressing with a message, Rihanna, is facing one of the most relatable side effects of motherhood: postpartum hair loss.
Interviewed by Refinery29 at the Fenty Hair launch party in Los Angeles on June 12, Rihanna admitted that after becoming a mother to sons Riza, 2, and Riot, 10 months, hair loss took her by surprise. (Specifically, she said, it "wasn't in the brochure" during her pregnancy.)
"I didn't expect it to happen in waves," Rihanna explained of the hair loss she experienced after giving birth." I thought it would just happen and grow back."
The "Needed Me" singer noted that she lost her hair in patches." At that point, you're like just okay enough," she said.
She was able to pull off the transformation by experimenting with hairstyles in a "more creative and clever" way. She dabbled with everything from blonde bangs and box braids to petal pink hair. Most recently, Rihanna debuted a pixie cut that emphasizes short, natural curls, perhaps to showcase the effectiveness of her new hair care line.
Rihanna officially launched Fenty Hair on Thursday, June 13. The line debuted to rave reviews from early testers, including Marie Claire beauty director Deena Campbell.
She worked with Yusef Williams, Rihanna's longtime hair stylist, to test the line of conditioning treatments. The products were effective, and after a few days of use, my hair felt healthier and stronger, and my blowout lasted a full three weeks, even in the sweltering New York heat," Campbell said.
Rihanna designed Fenty Hair with the goal of supporting stronger, healthier hair through all styles and stages of life. 'You all know how important it is for me to change my hairstyle,' she said. So not only am I launching a flexible product line that caters to every hair desire, but every product is designed to strengthen and repair every type of hair."
