"Hack" Season 4: Everything We Know

"Hack" Season 4: Everything We Know

In 2024, at 5.30 pm, the finale of Hacks Season 3 was fully followed, and television history was made as the friendship between stand-up legend Deborah Vance (Jean Smart) and her writer Ava Daniels (Hannah Einbinder) changed forever. The Emmy-winning Max original comedy spent the third season reuniting Deborah and Eva in pursuit of one goal: to make Deborah the host of a major late-night show. They were successful, but the double-crossed pair turned their often controversial relationship on its head, as Eva fully explained whether she was a veteran comedian

So what's in store for the comedy duo after that frosty, jaw-dropping final scene'About Hack Season 4? Read all the things you know so far.

Yes. Max announced the good news in late 2024-5, and on the same day the hack season 3 finale fell. The Streamer also revealed in a press release that the 3rd and 8th episodes of Season 7 gave the comedy the best 1-day viewership ever. Sarah Aubrey, head of Max Original Programming, said in a statement: "We congratulate Hacks' amazing cast and crew, and our partners at Universal Television." "Hack is a brilliantly crafted comedy that offers laughter and sharp insights about the vulnerability and joy of sharing dreams. The creative team behind this singular show is not only great, but also a pleasure to work with. Being able to offer viewers another season with Deborah, Ava and other Hacks families was no more happy.

Prior to the renewal of Season 4, show creators Lucia Aniello, Jen Statsky and Paul W.Downs opened up about the plans for the series in an interview with Deadline. The trio shared that they had always planned that the hack would be the arc of the 5 seasons and are still on its way.

"That's still our plan," Aniello told the outlet. "We started pitching the show in 2019, but since we've been thinking about it since 2015, it's great to plot and talk about where the show wants to go."

Our best guess on when the hack will come back can come from looking at previous release dates. After Season 1 premiered in 2021-5-13, Season 2 came in just 1 year after 2022-5-12. Season 3 ran into some delays, including last year's Hollywood strike and a short pause as star Jean Smart recovered from heart surgery. Lucia Aniello, co-creator of the series, said in an interview with the Hollywood Reporter in 2024-5, "To find out how long we've been working on this season, we started writing in 2022-5 and shot it in that 11 months. We did not finish filming until 2024/1."

That this Season 4 has gotten such a quick renewal, it's probably hack creative team is already working on upcoming episodes. Fingers crossed that the series will return to our screens in 2025-5.

Season 4 will probably focus on the full rivalry between Deborah and Eva behind the scenes of their late-night show, which, while being heartbreaking for Deborah-Eva-bestie-shippers, will undoubtedly promote an excellent season of television.

The Season 3 finale comes when Eva went behind Deborah's back to snag the head writer role on her new late-night talk show Originally, Deborah had asked her right writers to come with her to the network show - she instantly agreed and told them they were her. She quit her other TV writing job in the process, even after she offered a promotion to the show. But after the comedy icon tells her mentee that the network boss told her she can't make mentee a head writer, Ava learns that it's a complete lie — she goes behind her to secure a job and threatens her with blackmail if she doesn't agree.

Now that Ava has leveled the power dynamics between the two, they're planning to launch a new show next season, while we're trying to make their new late-night show a success. If Ava leaks to the tabloids her boss has hooked up with network executive Bob Lipka (Tony Goldwyn) — the information she threatens to release, she must fill the head writer's position — it, of course, makes for another publicity blunder to navigate.

In an interview with Deadline, the cast and crew of Hacks made a bit of fun of the upcoming plot and what it would be like to see Ava become her full power.

"What we're setting is that Deborah is currently at the biggest stage of her career," Statsky said. "She now has this huge gig that has to work. But now she is at odds with her closest collaborators, and, to be honest, the closest friends, because she betrayed her."

Smart also talked about how she interprets her character's reaction to Ava's decision to ignore her, and how she expects the upcoming new season to look like.

"Much to Deborah's dismay. Eva learned a lesson that she taught her a little too well," she said.

Of the last scene, she added, "It's a mixture of anger and admiration; almost pride. And at the last moment, "Oh, this will be fun."'"
