Princess Diana's hair stylist reveals why the late Royal family wore a diamond necklace as a headband
Biker shorts and sweatshirts may be a typical Princess Diana-related fashion moment, but the late Royal family also sets the standard for innovative beauty hacks. Royal-style watchers may recall the night of 1985, when the Princess of Wales left Melbourne, Australia, with a diamond and emerald choker on her forehead at 10.31 AM.
At the time, little was known about Diana's decision to turn her necklace into a headband. But now there is new information about what happened at the moment leading up to the moment of historical beauty. Richard Dalton, Princess Diana's long-time hair stylist, revealed at the "Styling Princess Diana" panel held at the Fotografiska Museum in New York on Tuesday 21st that the choice came from practicality.
"I think she had a tan on her neck, so I said, 'Let's make a headband,'" Dalton said in an interview. "I asked her dresser, Evelyn, for a 6-inch knicker elastic (the kind that grandma uses)."With a little spontaneous tailoring, the choker was made long enough to fast to the head of the royal family.
The little nugget about Diana's best beauty moments wasn't all Dalton had to share in the conversation. The hair stylist also revealed a sneak peek into his haircut session with Prince William and Prince Harry. Apparently, the boys, who are now 41 and 39 respectively, welcomed Dalton's visit as they were accompanied by "extra TV" time. "She trusted me enough to go up to the nursery room," he shared at the event. "They were both so sweet.
Dalton worked as Princess Diana's hair stylist for 10 years. The duo met when Princess Diana was only 17 years old and were known as the "honorable Diana Francis Spencer."."While together, Dalton often styled Diana's hair 1 times in 2 days: 1 time in the morning before the daytime event and 1 time in the evening before the tiara was installed.
Princess Diana began to rely on her stylist for a break from the scope of royal life, Dalton revealed in the same interview. "She called me at Windsor Castle and said, "Can you finish my hair in your apartment?""She loved coming to my house because it was normal," he recalled. Of course, her tiara collection was not anything.
