Pat McGrath brings an edgy, negative space lip liner to the Louis Vuitton 2025 Cruise Collection

Whenever Dame Pat McGrath is the lead makeup artist on the runway show, I pay attention. The founder of the brand, who became a make-up artist, rarely sends models to the catwalk with a minimal appearance, despite the fact that so far. She found the artwork.

McGrath's latest work is no exception. Yesterday, for the Louis Vuitton Cruise 2025 show in Barcelona, Spain, McGrath thought of a very graphic negative space lip liner look that highlighted an artificial Cupid bow.

In stark contrast to the over-lining and naked lip looks from the spring/summer circuit, the Louis Vuitton show was played into the negative space of the lips, using angled lines and deep shades. I redrawn lips of all shapes and sizes to create a V-shape in the center of the upper lip.

The sharp design was a fusion of Spanish tradition and edgy aesthetics. This concept has been effortlessly brought to life with the help of McGrath's latest creation for her namesake brand: the Dramatique Mega Lip pencil, available in 12 shades and set to launch at 5/31.

"The dramatic is to encourage people to be creative in makeup," the make-up artist said in a press release shared with Marie Claire "Today at Louis Vuitton we were able to showcase the artistry that can be achieved with this product, which combines the luxurious pigmentation of lipstick with the versatility and convenience of a pencil."

It took a long time to put the play into action. Lip liners have been in development for years — and have been secretly tested on celebrities in the past months. McGrath secretly used it with both Naomi Campbell and Tyla to debut the product at the Met Gala.

Emphasizing artistry is a skill set that Dame Pat McGrath demonstrates over and over again. Example: Maison Margiela Spring/Summer 2024 collection, which received critical acclaim for the artistry of flawless beauty. McGrath used a series of peel-off face masks and illuminators to create porcelain glass-like skin for the fashion show models.

It was my favorite runway look so far, but today's Louis Vuitton Lip Liner is a close second.
