Aya Wilson is Officially Nike's Signature Athlete

To quote Nike: "Of course, A'ja has the shoes.

Today, Nike announced A'ja Wilson as the newest member of the brand's signature athlete roster. Next year, Nike will launch Wilson's signature shoe, the aptly named "A'One," a collection inspired by Wilson's "unique style, incredible performance, and uncompromising realism," Nike said in a statement.

"Being a signature athlete is something I've always dreamed of doing. Having my own shoes, my own collection, is like that: having my own shoes means having my own collection." Let these people wear A'ja gear"

.

Wilson worked closely with the brand on both A'One, which she describes as "light, comfortable" and "wearable anywhere and everywhere," and her next collection, which will be available in men's, women's and kids' sizes.

"It was a lot of fun just putting it all together. I'm a perfectionist. 'So it took me a little while ...... I didn't just wake up one night and greatness was here.

As Nike's newest signature athlete, Wilson has had a tremendous amount of success and joins a long list of athletes and Nike collaborators who have gone down in history: Serena Williams, Megan Rapinoe, Naomi Osaka, Sabrina Ionescu.

Nike's announcement comes thanks to college-turned-pro basketball stars Caitlin Clark and Angel Reese, and recently undefeated and unrivaled South Carolina Gamecocks coach Dawn Staley, whose women's basketball NCAA season has been one for the ages.

This frenetic moment for women's basketball (and women's sports in general) should not be missed, especially when Wilson, a first-round draft pick and five-time All-Star, prepares to launch her signature shoe and begin the 2024 WNBA season.

"I'm so happy to be ready for this moment," she explains." We are not new to this. We are true to this.'"

"So to be a part of this growth and to blossom in it was really, really just amazing," she continues. 'Now all eyes are on us. Now we can really perform."

The two-time WNBA MVP knows how important it is for black and brown girls to represent themselves on the court, both on primetime television and in Nike's signature line.

"This partnership was a 'pinch' moment from the beginning. I can't believe Nike said, "We want you to be our signature athlete." ...... That's huge, especially for someone who looks like me," she explains.

She adds: "I uplift the next generation and say, 'Yes, you can wear the shoes.'
