Read MoreOn the final day of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's stay in Nigeria, the Duchess of Sussex repurposed a sentimental gown in honor of Mother's Day.
Markle attended a reception at the state governor's residence in Lagos on Sunday, May 12, as part of the royal couple's three-day visit to Nigeria to mark the 10th anniversary of the Invictus Games, and Carolina Herrera's floor-length, sleeveless, yellow silk column gown that shone.
The Duchess, forever a fashion icon, completed her look with a Logan Hollowell diamond necklace and Jennifer Myers hammered disc earrings.
The Duchess of Sussex wore the same gown for her son Prince Archie's first birthday in 2020.
The Duchess's decision to repurpose the gown was especially lovely because she was unable to spend Mother's Day with her children. (Markle received heartfelt Mother's Day wishes throughout the trip.)
According to both "People" and "Hello" reports, Markle made an effort to "wear more color" on her public appearances, hence the yellow Carolina Herrera gown as well as the truly stunning red by up-and-coming Nigerian designer Orire dress by emerging Nigerian designer Orire, decided to wear it a day earlier.
"It's been a dizzying 24 hours since we arrived," Markle said on May 11 at a panel discussion with media executive Mo Abudu and Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, director general of the World Trade Organization.
"I quickly got the memo that I need to wear more colorful clothes so I can blend in with your fabulous fashion!" She added.
Orire is a female-led brand based in Lagos, Nigeria, and was a meaningful fashion choice for Markle's visit to the country, where she recently discovered she is 43 percent Nigerian.
"Being African-American also means that you don't know much about your lineage, your background, where you come from specifically," Markle said at the same panel discussion.
On Mother's Day morning, in keeping with her desire to wear more color, Markle was spotted wearing a Carolina Herrera button-down shirt and a traditional Nigerian skirt given to her by the royal couple on their visit to Abuja.
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex were greeted by enthusiastic dancers and well-wishers at the airport on their third and final day in Nigeria, where they were able to watch local people perform traditional Nigerian dances before heading to the day's meaningful events and festivities.
