Bella Hadid's Ôrebella' Fragrance is Here - Here's What Beauty Editors Really Think
In between cowgirling up her closet to announce the launch of her beauty brand Ôrebella, due this Thursday (May 2), Bella Hadid changed her profession to "scientist" on Instagram. A few weeks ago, we asked her to explain why in the form of a perfume bottle in the shape of three crystals.
It was finally revealed that Bella Hadid's ÔrebellaÕ will debut this week with an intense trio of perfumes designed with fragrance houses Firmenich and Robertet. Window2Soul, a sheer floral of rose, jasmine, and lemon; Salted Muse, a woody combination of sea salt, amber, lavender, and pink pepper; and Blooming, a spicy blend of bergamot, patchouli, and Tahitian monoi flower. Fire". Each fragrance will be available in 50mL to 100mL and will sell for $35 to $100. (A trademark search in February suggested that Hadid's label would include fragrances, hair care products, and lotions. Unexpected and fitting for her new title is the experience of using each fragrance, Ôrebella takes the homemade fragrance Hadid used to make on her family farm and levels it up with a formula that changes color when shaken. It's both eye candy and experimental: as the hue and viscosity of each perfume changes, the brand claims, it activates ingredients that are potent, long-lasting, and moisturizing to the skin. (Ôrebella is pronounced "ah-la-bella," which seems to be Hadid's unique energy reading.)
The inspiration for the collection was not as down-to-earth as it may seem. She explains, "My inspiration for fragrances came from growing lavender on our farm.
"There are so many varieties of essential oils, and I'm really into combining them with things I wouldn't normally scent."
Hadid allowed Marie Claire to test how unexpected Ôrebella fragrance combinations are before they launch online on May 2 and arrive in Ulta stores nationwide on May 10. I spent the past few weeks shaking, spraying, and living ÔrebellaÕs three new fragrances. (I also asked Marie Claire editors to try the three scents and rate them in a blind fragrance test on Instagram.) Read my honest review.
ÔrebellaÕs three fragrances arrive in boxes with their own color scheme and shiny gold brand logo: Window2Soul is a pale jasmine purple, Blooming Fire is a dusty desert amber, and Salted Muse" is a seaside aquamarine.
I have tested many perfumes over the years, but the word "bottle" does not capture the container of these perfumes: it is more like a crystal dug up on an underground expedition or a meteorite discovered by Space X on a journey through a galaxy far, far away. 10mL, 50 All three sizes (10mL, 50mL, and 100mL) come in oval crystal containers with shiny rectangular caps. The glass is transparent, revealing the light blue, amber, and lavender liquid inside.
While it is not difficult to imagine the rectangular shape sitting on Hadid's vanity next to a pile of crystals or a 12-step morning supplement routine, it was counterintuitive to display it on my counter. After turning the bottle over in my palm several times, I noticed that one of the facets, cut larger than the others, had enough surface area to stand the bottle on its side. (For $35, Ôrebella also sells a gold stand that supports a 100-mL bottle.)
From the otherworldly packaging, I assumed that Ôrebella's fragrance would utilize ingredients not yet discovered on earth. Instead, they have improved and tweaked the familiar scent profile.
The Salted Muse has the woody, sea salt mixed with sea salt vibe I typically associate with oud and men's cologne, with the addition of lavender and pink pepper. Then there is Window2Soul, a more romantic blend of rose and jasmine, with notes of creamy tonka bean appearing after the fragrance has completely dried. It's a spicy, tropical blend of Tahitian monoi flower, patchouli, and bergamot. (Smelling each perfume is not as easy as a quick spray on the wrist. These perfumes begin as translucent, oily juices and are ready for application only when they are shaken vigorously and become an opaque, milky liquid. This action "activates" the two-phase formulation of each perfume, says the brand. It's a hypnotic extra step: you'll find yourself shaking the perfume to watch it change, without necessarily putting it on.
All three scents were just translucent enough to be air-sprayed, but when rubbed on the skin, they clearly pack an aromatic punch. The scents lasted for eight to ten hours each day. I learned that a single spray on the inside of my wrist was my limit. Any more than that and I'm a walking perfume counter (especially with the intense scent of Blooming Fire). I have sensitive skin prone to eczema, but thanks to the brand's alcohol-free, paraben-free, phthalate-free, sulfate-free, and gluten-free formulations, I experienced no symptoms after days of continuous use. However, I did not notice exceptionally soft skin due to the moisturizing blend of snow mushroom and five oils in each fragrance, which are known to be highly effective moisturizers.
During the first week, I rotated between the three fragrances; by the second week, Window2Soul became my absolute favorite. I found the combination of rose, jasmine, and lemon to be perfect for the transition from spring to summer. Blooming Fire, on the other hand, had the warmth and weight I associate with winter scents, while Salted Muse felt too close to my husband's sea salt cologne to even be my own scent. (But if you like musk scents, I can see it being a top selection.)
I secretly packed Window2Soul on a work trip to Paris and it was well received. I got compliments from both journalists in the press pool and from sources I met. The jasmine and lavender scents I had previously used had always resonated with me, but had never received the attention they deserved.
Orebella made a strong, heady first impression. This is the kind of perfume that makes you think "This is it!" the moment it comes out of the box. I can't imagine that any of these three perfumes would make a more unique fragrance wardrobe with the other perfumes I already own. I can't imagine any of these three perfumes layered with other perfumes I already own in a more personalized fragrance wardrobe. They are intense and instantly noticeable, like the Hadid sisters sprinting down the runway. Less noticeable is the skin moisturizing effect of the layered formula, but I'm willing to keep wearing the perfume to see if it needs more time to become obvious.
Window2Soul was my front-runner for a perfume that I felt was wearable, unlike other scent profiles I have tried previously; what I found most unique among the three scents was the packaging and the shake-to-activate formula - avant-garde in the bottle! This was thanks to the TikTok-friendly chemistry on display. Shake it and you'll see why Bella Hadid feels like a scientist these days.
Ôrebella can be ordered on May 2 at Orebella.com and on May 10 at Ulta.
