Most Gorgeous Hair and Makeup in Golden Globes History

Often seen as the younger sister of the Academy Awards, the Golden Globes are nonetheless one of the most glamorous nights on the awards season calendar. The awards also boast a more impressive guest list than either the Emmys or the Oscars, as they honor not only the film category but also the television category. (There is also a rare open bar at the awards ceremony, which is probably not unrelated to the many controversial scenes at the Globes.) Every year, the Globes red carpet is a must-see for both fashion and beauty, and the perfect mood board if you're looking for inspiration for your next formal event. So let's take a look at the best hair and makeup in Globes history.

Let's be honest (and maybe unpopular): we never liked Joan Collins' over-the-top style. That said, she is quite fabulous here. Perhaps it's because her hair is not too high and her striking 80s makeup (dark eyes, blush, lips) matches the event's prestige.

Not surprisingly, Selena Gomez walked the red carpet for the 2023 Golden Globes in a full face of makeup from Rare Beauty (a line she founded and owns). I love the full matte pink and the radiance and "lit from within" texture to her skin (primed with Ole Henriksen products).

Ah, the 80s. Morgan Fairchild applies intense blush and lipstick here, and it's a testament to her power that she lands the plane effortlessly. The lip color matches the dress perfectly, and while the pink-red blush might normally seem like overkill, this is a great example of maximum work.

It's a little hard to see in this picture, but Angelica Houston has a 50s hair flip, 20s eyebrows, and 60s-style flowers in her hair (1974, if you're wondering). The confluence of influences is, frankly, striking.

In 2009, we loved chunky teal jewelry. This is probably the best iteration of the concept, and it helps that Eva Mendes has an appropriately formal (and stunning) look. The deeply parted bangs and glamorous covering of one eye is very Old Hollywood.

Cher in the 1980s is one of my favorite iterations. She officially abandoned her "Sonny & Cher" roots and embraced the big hair and accessories of this decade. But I also love that her makeup is minimal and she literally looks like she's wearing a tank top under a blazer.

Side parts, I love it. Jessica Alba is best known for her coral lip and dress at the 2013 Globes, but I actually like this one better (from 2012). It's simple, romantic, and a bit messy again.

Aside from the very pale under-eye makeup that was often favored in the 70s, this look by Farrah Fawcett is pretty much unquestionable. The cheeks and lips are a peachy nude color, but you know what I mean.

Many of Gwyneth Paltrow's beauty looks at the Golden Globes are worthy of note, but this is probably my favorite. She has that glow (she was pregnant at the time), which is further enhanced by the soft updo, Barbie pink lips, and matching dark blush.

I don't think Julie Andrews gets enough credit for how simple her hair and makeup were in her heyday (this was 1983). Her hair is quite short, you could call it bixie (a hybrid of bob and pixie), but it is deep, soft, and romantic, matte lips and blush to match.

Jenna Ortega has a romantic but slightly edgy makeup style (a little more "out there" than the Wednesday Adams character she plays), and this is no exception. We love the double cat eyes and abundant lashes, and the 90s pink of the blush and lips tie the overly bold look together.

The Queen of Pop has had numerous fashion moments, at the Globes and beyond. However, I think this look is an underrated classic. Here she is in full Evita mode, hence the perfectly smooth hair and deep wine red lipstick. It's worth keeping as a keepsake before she moves on to her next job.

Sometimes you don't have to do anything fancy to get the perfect glamour. Sometimes a simple spaghetti strap dress needs a matching red lip. Being a supermodel probably helps.

Taylor Swift's lime green gown had already had fans buzzing (she has Easter eggs scattered throughout her wardrobe, and this gown was reminiscent of her iconic "snake").

Beyoncé wore this Lorraine Schwartz loop bib necklace (which weighs 200 carats; it's a very pretty piece of jewelry). But actually, I like her simple chignon best.

A deep indigo dress as lovely as this one needs no extra embellishment, but Marion Cotillard carried the theme all the way to the eyes, with stunning deep blue eyeliner and eyeshadow. And it matches her gray-blue eyes. It's synergy.

Debbie Allen, one of Broadway's leading performers (and choreographer and on-screen dance teacher for Fame), looks absolutely stunning here. Soft, voluminous updo, smoky eyes, and essentially no jewelry other than the discs she wears in her ears.

Now, Mia Farrow's super short bob (made iconic when she appeared in Rosemary's Baby) is the stuff of legend. But it's the dark, spiky lashes coupled with the simple makeup that elevates her look even more.

Drew Barrymore doesn't always show off her incredibly voluminous hairstyle on the red carpet. It matches the volume of her cornflower blue dress, and her blue eye shadow is perfect, like a chef's kiss. Here's how you match.

Kerry Washington looks exceptionally happy here (and with such a bold outfit, we can see why). Her eye makeup complements the silver and black chain she is wearing, and the red lip finishes off the outfit in a way that draws the eye upward toward her face.

Gemma Chan didn't need much of a beauty look as she opted for a dramatic blue draped gown. However, her silver eye makeup smartly matched her earrings, and like the other women on this list, the red lip kept her face from being overshadowed by the dress.

Reese Witherspoon only ever had big sausage curls early in her adult film career, but I can't help it: I love this look. Paired perfectly with her big pearl necklace, it just makes a visual statement.

For those of you who may not know, Grace Kelly wore a pistachio green silk dress to the 1955 Academy Awards. Green dress (this one is shorter and simpler), minimal eye and cheek makeup, and pink red lips. The classics are classics for a reason.

Julia Roberts is best known for her first Globe look in an oversized men's suit, but I actually like this sophisticated follow-up look just as much. She still wore pinstripes (in this case, a skirt suit), and her short hair and peachy makeup are just beautiful.

Wow, Lucy Boynton, you have great eyes. There is so much synergy between a silver dress and gold hair accessory with eye makeup, but somehow she pulled it off thanks to the artfully placed rhinestones. The rest of the look is simple and complimentary.

Sometimes the element of surprise is the best way to make a statement. Rachel Brosnahan is already seductive with matching red lips, but turn to the side and the hairstyles are also matching. Her high, slicked-back ponytail is not too juvenile.

Lupita Nyongo is responsible for many fashion and beauty looks, and her off-the-shoulder red gown was one of the most beloved dresses at the Globes. Add a matching lip and gold eyeshadow to complete the look.

It's easy to joke that "I look like a statue at the Golden Globes," but in this case it's entirely appropriate. The contrasting gray eyeshadow and sheer lip gloss bring the whole look together, but it's understated compared to the sparkle of the dress.

Scarlett Johansson wore a stunning red dress to the 2007 Golden Globe Awards. Her choice of pink lip and eye shadow was a bit surprising (the obvious choice is a red lip), but it "neutralized" the look in a cool way.

When you can wear a pendant as stunning as that, the whole outfit should be centered around it. The dress is obviously a match, but the little sparkle in the corner of Halle Berry's eye is also a subtle nod to the statement piece. The rest of the look is simple.

You can't tell in these photos, but Marilyn Monroe's dress is a bright emerald green. Not to mention her trademark platinum blonde bob, crimson lips, and near-white eye shadow.

Margot Robbie joined the superstar ranks with her Barbie awards ceremony look. In this look, the classic shade was incorporated into her eye makeup and lips. Never has pink been used so smartly and strategically.
