Read MoreMet Gala 2024, the red carpet Olympics of fashionable celebrities, is fast approaching. Among celebrity stylists, the first Monday in May has become a showdown to see who can present the most striking and memorable looks for their clients. For those of you who will be watching from the comfort of your couch in your favorite worn sweatpants, it's a thankless opportunity to be the fashion critic of the night.
Red carpet opulence aside, the Met Gala is a black-tie benefit event to raise funds for the Costume Institute at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, aka the Anna Wintour Costume Center. Tickets cost over $30,000 per person and attract a prestigious guest list that includes A-plus listers, fashion industry insiders, star athletes, and award-winning actors.
Following last year's Met Gala red carpet, which was dedicated to the late Karl Lagerfeld, this year's dress code is "The Garden of Time." Even knowing the theme of the evening, you probably still have questions about Met Gala 2024: Which celebrities will attend? Who will surpass Jared Leto's shpet-cat costume from last year?
Marie Claire has everything you need to know before this year's ball. Keep scrolling for details on which celebs will be in attendance, the origin of this year's theme, and fashion predictions for Met Gala 2024.
Met Gala 2024 will take place on May 6, 2024 at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. The red carpet arrives at approximately 5:30 PM EST.
Met Gala 2024 is the Costume Institute's upcoming spring exhibition, "Sleeping Beauties: Fashion Awakenings." The exhibition will feature approximately 250 garments and accessories spanning more than four centuries, including archives from Schiaparelli, Dior, Givenchy, and Saint Laurent. The collection, which will be on display in the center of the exhibition hall, includes a 17th century Elizabethan bodice, a Charles James "butterfly" ball gown, an 1887 silk satin dress by couturier Charles Frederick Worth, and other historically significant, never-to-be-worn again Fifteen delicate and rare garments will be on display. These unique items are the "Sleeping Beauties" for whom the exhibit is named.
Sponsored by TikTok and Loewe, the exhibition will also feature immersive sensory activations that play with scent, sound, touch, and movement. Guests will smell the scents of flowers that once adorned headwear, feel the intricate hand-stitched embroidery of garments, and experience the illusion of time travel.
Andrew Bolton, curator in charge of the Costume Institute, said in a press statement that the aim of the exhibit is to "reconnect with the vibrant, dynamic, and ultimately life as the works on display were originally intended." The exhibit opened to the public on May 10 and will continue through September 2, 2024.
The dress code for the Met Gala 2024 is "Garden of Time," in honor of the exhibit's tribute to historical fashion. The concept is derived from the title of a 1962 short story by J.G. Ballard, a romantic yet dystopian tale with symbolism associated with ephemeral beauty and the uncontrollable passage of time.
On the fashion front, the dress code for this year's Met Gala lends itself to a literal interpretation of the botanical concept. Three-dimensional rosettes, garden-fresh prints, and flora and fauna motifs are the focus. Also expected to be popular on this year's red carpet are looks that explore the concept of time, either abstractly or through quirky interpretations such as clock graphics and wristwatches.
Zendaya, Jennifer Lopez, Bad Bunny, and Chris Hemsworth will co-chair the 2024 Met Gala. In addition, Loewe's Creative Director Jonathan Anderson and TikTok's CEO Shu Chu will serve as honorary chairs.
While the full guest list remains a mystery (aside from the Honorary Chairperson, who is certain to attend), past galas can predict who will attend this year's event. Big-name showstoppers like Rihanna, Beyonce, Blake Lively, and the Kardashians, who have donned some of the best Met Gala gowns of all time, are sure to be in attendance. Several fashion designers will likely walk the red carpet with their celebrity guests. At the Met Ball 2019, Brandon Maxwell famously assisted Lady Gaga's iconic fashion night with four outfit changes.
You can watch the evening's red carpet by livestreaming the event on Vogue.com and social media platforms such as Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook beginning at 5:30 p.m. EST.
