Zendaya Ends "Challenger" Fashion Tour with Tribute to Williams Sisters

Zendaya and image architect Lo Roach saved their most poignant behavior from the Challengers press tour for last.

A few days after the Challengers Los Angeles premiere, Roach released two photos of his star client that paid homage to the early Venus and Serena Williams Vogue photo shoots. Zendaya's look is a square-necked Carolina Herrera gown with exaggerated black and white stripes, paired with a shoulder-length beaded braid. This is a detailed recreation of the matching Herrera dress from an editorial the Williams sisters shot with photographer Annie Leibovitz in 1998.

On Instagram, Roach thanked Carolina Herrera's creative director, Wes Gordon, for designing the replica gown." An ode to the greats," he wrote, tagging Venus and Serena Williams." Thank you for all you have done!"

To match Venus and Serena's 1998 hairstyles, Zendaya commissioned custom wigs from Kimball Hair Care, styled by Ursula Stephen. Longtime makeup artist Ernesto Casillas was responsible for her strong eyeliner and glowing skin, and he also took Zendaya's photographs.

Zendaya and Lo Roach illustrated the turning point of two of the greatest tennis players in history with their recreations: in 1998, Venus and Serena Williams were 17 and 16 years old, respectively. That year, they played their first professional match at the Australian Open. The Vogue photo shoot also set the stage for a career-long relationship with fashion that would see the sisters in the front row at Fashion Week and in campaigns for major luxury and sportswear brands.

Zendaya's Carolina Herrera bespoke look capped off a four-week fashion marathon in which references to tennis were not taken too literally. Actress Tashi Duncan embodied her character in everything from a glittering Loewe tennis dress to a Wimbledon white dress by Louis Vuitton, Thom Browne, and Calvin Klein. For the final premiere, she went in a different direction, pulling a deconstructed Vera Wong gown from the Roach archives (perhaps to match the pink and black color scheme of the Challengers' carpet).

What better way to close one of the greatest press tours of all time than to mention its ultimate inspiration?
