Olivia Rodrigo's vintage Coach bag is a hit with Generation Z
Olivia Rodrigo may be a member of Gen-Z, but she has long had an affinity for vintage clothing. Her love of clothing designed before she was born goes back to her sour days, when she often wore punkish 1990s Betsy Johnson dresses on stage and off. Now in her guts phase, Rodrigo is turning vintage fashions into new, more subdued tastes. Her latest outfit, for example, swaps a frilly retro mini for a sleek slip dress and a Coach ergo shoulder bag.
The "Vampire" singer finished rehearsals in New York City earlier this week, fresh off four sold-out shows at Madison Square Garden, in a white slip dress covered in orange mini flowers. She accessorized with chunky brown Frye boots and a bright red Coach Ergo bag. The New York-based brand launched Ergo in the 1990s, a decade older than the singer (for reference, Rodrigo was born in 2003).
Rodrigo is not the only one currently obsessed with Coach bags. Coach got the viral treatment on TikTok last year, and many shoppers have been watching the new (and vintage!) review videos praised Coach as one of the bag brands of the year. Several well-known restoration accounts also appeared on the platform, logging thousands of views with tips for sourcing Coach bags from local thrift stores and making vintage styles look fresh out of the box.
The Ergo has become a cult favorite and was reissued in 2023 as Coachtopia, Coach's circular sustainable line. The most recent model is adorned with ribbons on the straps and was, naturally, an instant hit with the coquette crew. Made of at least 50 percent recycled leather, the newer models have shorter straps and a more rounded silhouette compared to Rodrigo's picks.
But Ergo is just the latest in a series of Coach styles that are making a splash in online fashion. The Tabby, a smaller, more structured shoulder bag with a large C logo clasp on the front, was the first silhouette to catch on a few years ago (the brand even released an inflated variation after the original sold out). The cherry red version Rodrigo had in New York was one of the most popular vintage styles on the TikTok app, proving that the singer probably draws style inspiration from the Internet as much as anyone else.
We can't shop Rodrigo's exact picks at the moment, but keep scrolling for options inspired by her vintage finds.
