Kirsten Dunst combines ballet-core and gothic black at "Civil War" premiere.
Kirsten Dunst is supporting the ballet-core aesthetic on the red carpet, but with a subtle twist.
On Tuesday night, the actress and Marie Claire cover girl attended a special screening of her upcoming film "Civil War" at the Academy Museum in Los Angeles. Dunst appeared on the red carpet in an all-black gown by Rodarte. The sleeveless maxi dress featured a contrasting ruffled mesh bodice and drop-waist satin skirt, which was dark and glamorous, reminiscent of the moody and elegant costumes in "Black Swan."
With the help of celebrity stylist Samantha McMillen, Dunst accessorized with dangling diamond earrings and chunky rings from Los Angeles-based label Neil Lane Couture.
Dunst stuck to simple glamour for the occasion. Makeup was by Patti Dubroff and consisted of black mascara, rosy cheeks, and her signature bold red lip. Hairstylist Bryce Scarlett wore her blonde locks in a low bun.
Rodarte is a constant in Dunst's red carpet wardrobe. She has worked with designers Kate and Laura Mullavy on several looks over the years and has even modeled for Rodarte's lookbooks, including the 2019 edition that announced her pregnancy. If Dunst's dress evokes comparisons to "Black Swan," it is not entirely unfounded: the Mullavy sisters designed part of Natalie Portman's black tutu in the 2010 film.
Dunst's appearance on the red carpet for "Civil War" came just days before the A24 film's scheduled release on April 12. She attended the event with her husband and co-star Jesse Plemons, who stood next to her in a brown tweed suit.
Dunst and Plemons, who first met in 2015 on FX's Fargo and later received an Oscar nomination for Power of the Dog, are set to star in an upcoming dystopian drama to be directed by Alex Garland. The film, which also stars Kylie Spaeny, Wagner Moura, Stephen McKinley Henderson, and Nick Offerman, follows a group of journalists in a future America as they attempt to reach the White House before a rebel faction attacks them.
In Marie Claire's March cover story, Dunst mentions that she nominated her husband for a supporting role in "Civil War." "Alex [Garland] is a man I ...... I feel very lucky to be married to one of the best actors," Dunst said in an interview.
In "Civil War," Dunst plays Lee Smith, a photojournalist who constantly risks her life to cover American battlefields for her fellow reporters. She also serves as a reluctant mentor to Jesse, played by "Priscilla" actress Kylie Spaney. Dunst
In an interview, Dunst added that the role of Lee is unlike any of her other roles, especially since the script for the film's story is centered on the female perspective. Dunst said of the role, "When I read the script, I knew I'd never done anything like this before."
I've never even worn anything like the look of the premiere.
