Queen Letizia's red leather pants add royalty to the runway

Queen Letizia shows that she is a royal fan of the fashion trend red.

She appeared with King Felipe VI to present a number of awards at the 2022 National Sports Awards at the Royal Palace of El Pardo in Madrid, Spain, on Thursday (it is unclear why the 2022 awards will be presented in April 2024). (It is unclear why the 2022 awards will be given in April 2024.) Recipients include athletes such as tennis player Carlos Alcaraz, who received the "Rey Felipe" Sports Award.

Queen Letizia appeared at the awards ceremony in a colorful outfit coordinated by her personal stylist, Eva Fernandez. She started at the top with a white chiffon blouse with poet sleeves. A delicate ribbon tie adorned the neck.

What really stood out in the queen's outfit were her red leather pants. She fastened a cream-colored belt around her waist and paired them with matching red pinwheels. She also accented the look with gold drop earrings. (Exact credits for her look have yet to be shared.)

Queen Letizia's bold color choice is not only indicative of her obsession with red on the high fashion runways over the past few seasons. Historically, red has also been a symbol of power. It is often associated with themes of dignity and passion. In other words, royal costumes are not mere coincidences.

In the Netflix documentary Harry & Meghan, which aired in 2022, Meghan Markle offers insight into the intentions behind her choice of costume colors. Meghan Markle spoke of wearing subdued tones to avoid drawing attention to her more senior family members. As she also said in episode 5, "My understanding is that if there's a group event, you can't wear the same colors as Her Majesty."

Now, of all the members of the Royal Family, the Duchess of Sussex wears the most vibrant shades proudly and without constraint. These vibrant colors have been claimed by other royal ladies such as Kate Middleton and Princess Diana. (Who can forget the famous red and black gown worn by the late Princess Diana at the British Embassy in June 1988?)

Queen Letizia's choice of colors is also a nod to her personal affinity for fashion: the 51-year-old fills her wardrobe with elaborate designer pieces, but she is also known as the "queen" of high-low fashion, wearing purse-friendly brands such as Mango She often wears brands that are more friendly to the wallet, such as Mango. When a trend gets Queen Letizia's seal of approval, it's almost always worth shopping for.
