Olivia Rodrigo's subversive spring outfit comes in (almost) 50 shades of gray!
Olivia Rodrigo's wardrobe may have undergone a subtle evolution over the past few years, but the singer always finds a way to infuse pop-punk energy into every occasion. Ahead of her GUTS tour stop in New York, the 21-year-old eschewed the springtime lavender hues associated with her album art and instead relied on her Y2K DNA to elevate the layers of muted colors.
On April 4, the "Vampire" singer was spotted heading to a hotel in midtown Manhattan in a white button-down shirt layered under a thigh-hugging topcoat of gray with multiple shades of neutral colors scattered throughout. He wore casual twists on classic business casual silhouettes, including gray washed straight-leg jeans.
Rodrigo balanced the (many) shades of gray with loose-fitting accessories. A black beanie, Gentle Monster oval sunglasses, a leather shoulder bag, and, in the ultimate alternative twist, Dr. Martens Jadon boots, glammed up the look.
Rodrigo is not necessarily associated with minimalism, but the "Obsessed" diva has always favored a relaxed style, both on and off the red carpet. Working with stylist Danielle Goldberg, Rodrigo has dressed designers from Sandy Liang to Vivienne Westwood, whose understated, vintage-leaning aesthetic is front and center. Her relaxed uniform makes the charcoal gray coloring she chose for the day all the more understated. As Rodrigo proves, this neutral shade is not only easy to pair with almost any outfit, but is also expected to be a color trend to watch on the spring 2024 runways.
"Charcoal gray" (and other variations) was once considered "dull" by the majority of high fashion, but in recent seasons, fashion houses such as Brandon Maxwell, Prada, and Ferragamo have reinvented neutral shades. They are now considered dynamic colors and serve as an alternative (or complement) to black and white.
Color theory aside, Rodrigo's style still represents one thing: despite the seemingly never-ending TikTok microtrend, Gen-Z can, in fact, have a personal style.
