Katie Holmes is back on trend with wedge sandals under $100

It was clear from the renaissance of ballet flats: it was only a matter of time before wedges would rise again. Last year, fashion brands from Prada to Zara all reintroduced the wedge heel. And now, Katie Holmes has officially endorsed the spring shoe trend, just in time for the warmer weather.

Holmes took a casual stroll around New York City yesterday wearing a pair of black and beige Franco Sarto Clemens espadrille wedge sandals. He paired those shoes with black wide-leg cropped pants, a black leather belt, and a cream-colored rib-knit fisherman's sweater. He also slung his customary Mansur Gavriel tote bag over his shoulder. [Wedge sandals were introduced to the Italian market by Salvatore Ferragamo in the late 1930s. Heeled sandals gained momentum from the 1970s through the 1990s and carried over into the 2000s.

On to the present: wedgessuns are not that surprising given the broad Y2K fashion resurgence that is taking place. Models like Bella Hadid have been wearing low-rise jeans and rectangular glasses for years. But Holmes' wedges take the style to a preppy, slash-boho vintage level, a la Ralph Lauren in the 2000s. It recalls the pop-collared polo shirts and long, flowing skirts of yesteryear.

With Holmes' example, reviewing trends is effortless: her pairs currently sell for under $100.

So far, Holmes has spent the past week in the same laid-back yet elevated look: two days ago, she paired a classic olive quilted utility jacket with wide black pants and slingback kitten heels. She was also photographed in a chunky sweater and her customary double-breasted Frankie Shoppe coat.

The week's lineup included oversized trench coats and relaxed button-up shirts that fit her signature smart-casual street style.
