Inside the workplace of Beyonce and Tina Knowles mother and daughter.
If the company is good only the people who run it, the new haircare line Cécred is already a gold star institution after months of business. Vice chairman Tina Knowles would know. She reports directly to her daughter Beyonce, the founder and chairman.
At the Powerplay Summit in Los Angeles, Tina opened up about working with Marie Claire editor-in-chief Nicki Ogunnaik on her latest beauty venture with Beyonce. She described the 32-time Grammy winner as a kind of co-worker or boss who everyone was lucky enough to have for reasons that had nothing to do with the apparent family ties. At Cécred, Beyonce sets strict standards that make the team "perfect" and she is very hands-on.
The brand left stealth mode only for a month, but Knowles and Knowles-Carter made twelve attempts to perfect the collection's eight cleansing and conditioning formula Cécred's clarifying shampoo and scalp scrub, a product duo inspired by the fight against eczema and psoriasis. Beyonce tested each, Knowles said.
"We sent this product back more than anyone else," she elaborated. "She (Beyonce) just kept saying, "Maybe better."
Accurate feedback was not limited to 1 scrub. Knowles said the Texas Hold'em singer constantly asked for updates on which butter or oil is included in each iteration of each formula, tested it on his own, and further
"For me, sometimes it's frustrating," Knowles said, "we'll work hard on the product and it's great." She would say, "I'm sorry, but it doesn't have enough slip into it."
Returning to the lab at Beyonce's request paid off in the long run. Beauty editors on the Internet gave cécred glowing reviews at its launch. (Marie Claire Beauty Director Dina Campbell described the line as "refreshing" in her review.
Beyonce did not learn to demand exactly what she wanted at work on her own; She got her C suite tendencies from observing her mom. Before breaking into the music industry, the final singer and mogul swept the floor in the headlines of her mother's Houston, Texas, hair salon. As a hair stylist, Knowles had already formulated a mixture to treat and restore dyed black hair — "impossible" to make other labels and if no one else would do it, Knowles would make it himself.
The drive for success in hair care (and anywhere else) after all these years is intertwined with the DNA of the pair. "We both have very strong personalities," Knowles said. The two go into their share of disagreements, she added. "It's a small battle of will. But overall, we are doing very, very well. We have the same vision.
Even when tensions arise, Knowles is Beyonce's most cooperative colleague. "I learn from her every day because she's so orderly, so deliberate and so careful about everything she's doing — she's just striving," Knowles said.
"We're both obviously pretty ambitious. Not just because you are ambitious, but because you want to make things the best."Equally impressive is spoken like a true boss about a leader.
