Rihanna reinterprets Dior's iconic "New Look" in Tomboy style

Dior's Paris Haute Couture Fashion Week shows feature countless A-listers, among them Rihanna, who sat in the front row of the Dior Spring/Summer 2024 Couture collection by Maria Grazia Chiuri. The French fashion house is known for its quintessential Parisian elegance, but Rihanna put her own "bad gal" spin on it: she wore a puff-sleeved peplum-style jacket and matching skirt with a flocky printed newsboy cap that she Matching. Fashion geeks will notice that her fit-and-flare top is simply a reprise of the Dior New Look, one of the brand's most notable silhouettes, only with a newfound fluffy material.

This particular style dates back to 1947, when Christian Dior first debuted the New Look. This style is characterized by a nipped-in waist, rounded shoulders, and a full skirt. While this silhouette traditionally corresponds to the "feminine" archetype, Rihanna challenges this style by adding a tomboyish touch. Yes, her look stays true to the key features of the silhouette, but with a bit of updating and styling to bring the classic look into 2024. Let's take a quick look.

Starting with the New Look-inspired outfit, Rihanna wears an off-the-shoulder puffer coat (similar to Monsieur Dior's bar jacket), cinched at the waist with a wide black belt. The top of the jacket was dramatically folded back to reveal a translucent black bra. Adding even more elegance, Rihanna's look continued into a matching knee-length skirt. As with many of Rihanna's best fashion moments, the real fun begins with the accessories.

Rihanna updated her new Dior look with elegant and edgy accessories. She paired a puffer coat with leather opera gloves and a patent leather Lady Dior bag by her side.

In true Rihanna fashion, jewelry was in full bloom, and she wore a striking diamond necklace and diamond ear cuffs. The all-black look was broken up with white pointed toe heels and glittery anklets. To finish off the ultra-cool Dior moment, Rihanna added a floppy newsboy-style black cap to this ensemble.

Rihanna has had a number of notable street style moments in recent months, but this Couture Week appearance is the multi-fenate's first since giving birth to her second child in August. Hopefully this won't be the only Paris style moment for Rihanna, as Couture Week has just begun in Paris, but again, we'll take what we can get.
