Hairstyles with slicked-back hair were all the rage at the Emmy Awards.

We all know that awards season is hotly anticipated. First and foremost, because the creators behind our favorite movies and TV shows will finally be recognized (or, unfortunately, eliminated) for the work they have put in over the past year. For example, the 2024 Emmys will feature fan-favorite shows like "The White Lotus," "Succession," "The Bear," and "Abbott Elementary," among others.

The shows being honored tonight vary in genre and subject matter, but it is hard not to notice the similarities as you watch the stars walk the red carpet. The trend is the exact opposite of the voluminous hair bows that swept the Golden Globes red carpet.

Hair bows have swept the red carpet, celebrity Instagrams, and street style mood boards. This ultra-feminine trend evokes nostalgic visions of girlhood and gives any look a wide, voluminous silhouette.

It was only a week or so ago that the Golden Globes took place, where hair bows reigned supreme, but it seems that a new hair trend is already taking shape. The slicked-back hair, a fashionable style of the 2020s (thanks to the off-duty model look favored by trendsetters like Bella Hadid), has taken over again on the Emmys red carpet. Stars like Tracee Ellis Ross, Sarah Snooki, Dominique Fishback, and Rachel Brosnahan showed off the style in different ways tonight. Some wore their hair in traditional buns or ponytails, while others framed their faces with loose tresses. Others, like Brosnahan, wore their hair loose but slicked back.

This look deviates significantly from hair bows in several ways. First, the slicked-back hairstyle is one of minimalism, whereas the hair ribbon is one of indulgence and even maximalism, depending on the size of the ribbon. Furthermore, slicked-back hair is a much more mature, "businesslike" look compared to the childlike playfulness of ribbons.

Regardless, I'm keeping an eye on this trend and the variety of hair looks already seen this early in the awards season.
