Kate Moss' sheer birthday dress was reminiscent of the naked dress era of the 90s
It's been a while since Kate Moss was photographed playing late into the night. But the supermodel is not done partying yet. She has been waiting for the ideal moment to revive the after-hours spirit that characterized the 90s. On Tuesday, the supermodel celebrated her 50th birthday in Paris. She celebrated at the Ritz Hotel with Stella McCartney, Haider Ackermann, Charlotte Tilbury, and Venus Williams. Her daughter Laila Moss was also in attendance, along with her fashion icon photographer boyfriend, Nicolai von Bismarck.
Hosting an intimate yet elaborate party was not the only thing Moss brought back from the last century. For the occasion, she also revived one of the beloved going-out styles that catapulted her to the A-list (and lives on our mood boards to this day).
Unlike the sleek iridescent finish of the OG, Moss was photographed heading to the Ritz in a darker, edgier black lace gown sourced from New York Vintage. She also draped a black and copper satin Alexandra King cape over her shoulders for a dramatic ensemble. She accessorized with diamond-encrusted bangles and completed the look with metallic sandals.
As Moss left the party at 2 a.m., she traded her flowing cape for a vintage 1984 Bob Mackie coat from Tilbury.
Moss's unforgettable see-through moment in 1993 may have been an accidental legacy, but she has continued to incorporate what has since become her signature look. Over the years, Moss has leaned toward a vampiric approach to her style, giving a similar sartorial spin to the iconic outfit.
In 2022, she attended the Diet Coke celebration and represented the year 93 in a see-through black dress with a stuffy neckline. Her model daughter, Laila Moss, has also recently nodded to the ensemble; in 2020, Laila wore her own naked dress to a Kim Jones event in a sheer black frock fitted at the ankle; in December, she attended the London 2023 Fashion Awards in London, she again paid homage to her mother by choosing a silver gown by Nensi Dojaca.
The sheer trend deepened for 2024, as our favorite fashion stars (Kendall Jenner! Suki Waterhouse!) ) have endorsed the barely-there look in recent weeks alone. While it may be intimidating to step outside in only ultra-thin layers, there are ways to comfortably wear a see-through look. Like Kate Moss, add a trusty undergarment underneath your bodysuit. If choosing bright shades is too much of a leap, take a cue from Moss and stick to neutrals like black (you can never go wrong with that color scheme).
