The Korean entertainment industry is known for producing epic genre-bending shows, and Netflix's latest K-drama is no exception: set in the spring of 1945 in Japanese-occupied Seoul (then known as Gyeongseong), "Gyeongseong Creature" draws inspiration from real historical events Inspired by real historical events, the film depicts a supernatural horror story centered on a mysterious and deadly creature. Jang Tae-sang, played by Park So-jung of "Itaewon Gumi" and "Wonders," is a wealthy pawn shop owner known as "Mr. Omniscient. He teams up with detective Yoon Chae-ok ("My Name," Han So-hee), who has come to Gyeongseong in search of his missing mother. Their search for the missing woman leads them to a hospital where the Japanese military is conducting sadistic and monstrous experiments on the Korean people.

Season 1 of "Gyeongseong Creature" premiered in two parts on December 22, 2023 and January 5, 2024, and is full of engrossing and heartbreaking plots, from the search for Chae Ok's mother, to the crossed romance between Tae Sang and Chae Ok, to the discovery of the identity of the main character Creature The show is packed with engrossing and heart-wrenching plotlines. By the end of the 10-episode season, the show will have plenty of cliffhangers for Tae-sang and Chae-ok to potentially face in the second season. Here is what we know so far about the second season, which has already been confirmed In the last three episodes released as part two of season one of [Gyeongseong Creature], the mastermind behind the military's monster experiments was confirmed: Lady Maeda (played by Claudia Kim of Avengers: Age of Ultron), who provided the funding to conduct the experiments, and her husband's mistress Myung-ja and Choi Ok s mother, were carefully selected as test subjects. In the final battle, Tae-sang and Chae-ok burned down Onseong Hospital and fought dozens of Maeda's henchmen. When the monster tried to attack Tae-sang, Chae-ok jumped in to catch the blow and told him not to hurt the man he loved. As he does so, the monster stops attacking and cries out with Tae-sang when Chae-ok appears to have fallen to his wounds.

After the battle, Tae-sang believes Chae-ok is dead and dedicates his fortune to the fight for Korean independence. In one of the last scenes, however, Chae-ok is shown floating in the water, and the monster revives her using najin, a parasite that the military used to experiment on the monster. The najin infects the human brain and takes over the synapses, mutating the victim into a deadly predator. (Cheok's mother is the only survivor of the experiment, but she only became a monster because she was injected with anthrax when she was given the najin.) Since no one knows the full extent of Najin's abilities, it is unclear what kind of power Chae-ok gains from Najin.

Episode 10 ends with a brief mid-credit montage showing the fate of Gyeongseong after the Japanese surrender (which in reality took place only six months after the events of the series). Television then shows key events in Korean history, including the 1988 Seoul Olympics and the rise of K-pop. The camera pulls back from the TV to show a man with a scar on the back of his neck walking through a modern-day Seoul office. When he turns around, it is Tae-sang, now called Ho-jae, who is somehow still the same age nearly 80 years later.

Unusually for a K-drama, Season 2 of "Gyeongseong Creature" was decided long before Season 1 aired; in November 2022, Netflix confirmed to the Korean press that the show had already been renewed for a second season and that filming was expected to begin the following year The company also confirmed that the show had already been renewed for a second season, with filming expected to begin the following year. Then, in August 2023, "Our Blues" actor Bae Hyun-sung was tapped to play the lead role in season two. In November, a fan released a photo from the set showing Park So-joon and Han So-hee in modern attire, suggesting that the new season would take place after the time slip.

Netflix has yet to confirm whether filming for season 2 has wrapped or if it is still in production. Either way, the sci-fi series will likely not appear on Netflix until 2025.

Netflix keeps a tight lid on spoilers, so for now all we know about season 2 is what little information we have coming from the cliffhanger: both Tae-sung and Cheok are alive and living in the present day, the same age as 1945. There are several options to explain the time slip. Reincarnation is a common theme in K-dramas, so the present-day Chae-ok and Tae-sang (or Ho-jae) could be descendants. Or perhaps only Ho-jae is a descendant and Chae-ok is immortal, monster or not, after his resurrection. Or, judging from the scar on Hojae's neck, Tae-sang could have been infected by Najin during the time jump and become a humanoid immortal monster.

In addition to the fate of Tae-sang and Chae-ok, several subplots in season one could lead to new villains in future episodes. Mrs. Maeda chose Myung-ja as her test subject because Myung-ja was pregnant with her husband's child. By the last episode, Myung-ja had been contaminated by Najin and had gone into labor. In one of the show's final scenes, a soldier finds General Kato sitting beside Myeong-ja's corpse, holding a newborn baby in his arms. Before the baby opens its green, inhuman eyes, part of Najin can be seen burrowing under the baby's skin.

If that is not enough material to deduce, Maeda herself somehow survived the hospital fire (despite the fact that she was right next to the bomb when it exploded). Kato visited the badly burned widow and asked her if she would return to Japan to live out the rest of her life, or if she would "continue to explore new possibilities." Kato leaves her a glass of water, which may or may not have been contaminated with nadine. We don't know if she will continue her experiments, raise Myeong-ja's baby herself, or drink the najin water to gain her own strength. Whatever she does, it is very likely that the show's biggest villain (except maybe Kato) will be active for Season 2.
