Unraveling the Meaning of Kylie Jenner's Vintage Gown at the Golden Globes
Kylie Jenner may not be an actor, but at last night's Golden Globes, she took on the most talked-about role of the night: girlfriend supporting Timothée Chalamet. Even if that Renaissance Tour moment could not be confirmed, Jenner and Chalamet's bromance at the awards ceremony proved that they are Hollywood's newest "it" couple. The beauty mogul "snuck" into the Golden Globes ceremony to support Chalamet, who won Best Actor for his role in the film "Wonka." However, despite skipping the Golden Globes red carpet, we believe Jenner's presence was well known. In fact, the reality TV star had an under-the-radar best-dressed moment that we must discuss: Jenner wore a vintage lace gown by Hanae Mori.
Jenner makes a style statement at every event she attends, and understandably so last night. At the Hollywood soiree, she chose a lingerie-like see-through vintage gown from Japanese designer Hanae Mori's Fall/Winter 1998 couture collection. Every inch of the gown is beaded, making it a museum-perfect piece, ideal for a statement maker like Jenner.
Jenner's team sourced this unique gown from Timeless Vixen, a vintage store in Beverly Hills. Lauren Lepire, owner of Timeless Vixen, knew that this gown would be ideal for Jenner. (Jenner's) stylists, Alexandra and Mackenzie Grandquist, sent me an image of what she was going for, so I went through my archives and pulled out a few more gorgeous vintage looks before they picked it up." After seeing the vibe [they wanted for Jenner's Golden Globes appearance], I knew this Hanae Mori would be perfect for her and the event," Lepire told Marie Claire.
Jenner's affinity for wearing vintage is nothing new, but it is always an exciting moment when a star pulls from the archives at a major awards ceremony. Lepire adds, "Modern design houses usually tailor-make dresses to walk in these events, but the fact that [Jenner and her amazing team] chose sustainable fashion really speaks volumes." The store owner points out that Hanae Mori is the only Japanese-American woman to have presented on the runways of Paris and New York, and the first Asian woman to be admitted to an official haute couture house.
"Hanae Mori continued to evolve her designs over the years, as evidenced by this 1998 couture gown. As for why Jenner chose this particular gown? She says, "With its hand-beaded sheer lace and stunning backless design, this gown is truly unique and gorgeous. It is sexy without being over-the-top, extremely elegant, and a true wearable work of art"
.
As for Jenner's other looks, she kept accessories fairly minimal and let the dress shine. Styled with a black Jimmy Choo "Bonnie" clutch bag ($850), her only jewelry was a simple diamond ear cuff. Her glamour stayed true to her typical red carpet style, ending the awards show moment in a loose, messy bun, further enhancing the "understated elegance" of the gown.
Whether planned or not, Jenner's other half on the night, Chalamet, wore a somewhat coordinated look. The "Wonka" star wore a sequined black suit from CELINE HOMME with a black and silver chain necklace and diamond watch that coordinated well with Jenner's black lace ensemble.
So will Jenner join Chalamet on the awards circuit for the rest of the season? If so, we can envision another vintage moment for Kylie's 2024 Oscar debut.
