Kristen Bell talked to her kids about mushrooms, but it "backfired."

Kristen Bell and Dax Shepard have a clear idea of how they want to raise their children, and it usually works out great for them.

Recently, however, Bell nearly got into trouble with her own mother when the two actors made an honest confession.

The "Good Place" actress recently appeared on Jimmy Kimmel Live to share a hilarious family anecdote.

Of her husband, she said, "He is very honest with our children, about everything."

The host replied, "Yes, he is honest about everything." I didn't want to say it, because I thought you would make me say it, but everything is just out on the table, right?"

Bell replied, "I'm not going to say it.

Bell confirmed what Kimmel supposedly already knew. 'Very, very honest,' he said. 'In fact, it backfired on me two weeks ago. My mother is more conservative than I am, and we've been really, really honest with our children.

Here's what happened: "I had never done drugs, and I wanted to try mushrooms for my 40th birthday, so my husband bought some and I tried them," Bell recalled. [It was a few years ago. I told my kids about it, and I overheard my daughter telling my mom and my grandma, 'I'm so glad you're teaching me all this stuff. Anyway, my mom really wanted to eat mushrooms. So ......"

"And then I went to the restaurant, and I was like, 'Oh my God, I'm so glad you told me.

"And I just walked by and was like, 'Oh, oh, oh, oh. For some reason I'm more worried about telling that to my mom than my daughter."

Kimmel noted that Bell and Shepherd's children may not have known what mushrooms their parents were referring to, but the actress quickly set the record straight.

"Their father is in recovery, so he's really honest with them about what alcohol does to their bodies, how it makes them feel funny, how it impairs them, what drugs do to their bodies, why most drugs are illegal, and things like that.

The famous couple shares daughters Lincoln, 9, and Delta, 7. The Shepherds have been very open in the past about their struggles with addiction and their long road to recovery.
