Read MoreSeason 5 of "The Crown" dredged up a lot of drama prior to its release. Royal officials were apparently very concerned about how the show would handle a sensitive time in recent royal history, especially Princess Diana.
Prince William reportedly expressed his displeasure with the program's decision to portray his late mother's 1995 "Panorama" interview with the BBC's Martin Bashir, which is entirely understandable. Of course, from the point of view of the show's producers, there is no way they would leave out this important episode.
For royal expert Nick Bullen, not only was the depiction of the interview in Panorama a sensitive subject, but "The Crown" did not accurately convey the facts.
"Look, this is a drama. It's somewhat factual fiction," he told Us Weekly.
"Virtually all of it was sort of an expansion of that. I don't think they went far enough into how Bashir was interviewed. I mean, they mention it, but what happened there was incredibly fraudulent.
Buren also believes that Diana's reaction after the interview was not accurately portrayed.
"I think in the first few days [of the interview] she really felt she had put her voice out there," he added.
"She also believed, Bashir said, that the security services listened to her and believed what was going on. As it became clearer, I think it became increasingly clear that that was a big mistake."
During the interview, the Crown Princess opened up about her affair with Prince Charles and Camilla Parker-Bowles and her personal mental health struggles.
"To be fair, 'The Crown' correctly reported the fact that her brother, Charles Spencer, had begun to have concerns about Bashir before the interview and was trying to convince Diana that this was probably not the right approach," Bren He added.
"As we saw on the show, Bashir was trying to reproduce bank statements and claim that people were being paid by security services. If you were shown that, you would believe it, even if you weren't already paranoid about what was going on. I think she regrets it."
Like many other commentators, Buren warned viewers to take the Netflix drama with a grain of salt. What is so clever about The Crown, he said, is that it takes away enough facts to fabricate the truth."
"I think people need to be aware that this is a drama based on real events. But that's the danger: ...... It's about how far the real events have gone."
