Just an hour before the Queen's death was announced, a double rainbow broke through the clouds over London's Buckingham Palace, where Her Majesty spent most of her historic 70-year reign.

At the time, crowds had already gathered at the palace (according to the Mirror) after authorities announced shortly after 12 p.m. London time that the queen was "under medical supervision."

After a heavy downpour, a double rainbow appeared, "bringing comfort to the crowds who had been anxiously awaiting news of her recent condition," the outlet reported.

At 6:30 p.m. London time, the Palace announced that Her Majesty the Queen "passed away peacefully this afternoon at Balmoral."

The rainbow could be seen not only over the Palace, but also over major landmarks throughout London, including the Elizabeth Tower at Westminster and the Queen Victoria Memorial.

About 90 minutes before the announcement, a woman laid the first bouquet of flowers at the palace shortly after 5 pm. The crowd that gathered outside the palace reached about 1,000, the Mirror reported.

King Charles III and Queen Camilla are scheduled to arrive at the palace tomorrow. They will remain in Balmoral.

This rainbow proves, at least to the author, that even in the darkest hours, something utterly magical can appear.
