Prince William gets new title as Prince Harry and Meghan Markle step down from the royal throne

Prince William (opens in new tab) has officially been given a new title.

This weekend, Queen Elizabeth (opens in new tab) appointed Prince William as the new High Commissioner to the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland, making him the Queen's personal representative to the Church of Scotland. This position includes carrying out official visits and ceremonial duties on behalf of the monarch.

"Each year, the Queen appoints a High Commissioner to represent the monarch at the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland," the official royal website explains (opens in new tab).

"Since the 16th century, the monarch has been committed to upholding the Church of Scotland. The obligation to "maintain the settlement of the true Protestant religion as established by the laws made in Scotland" is confirmed in the Act of Union of England and Scotland of 1707. Princess Anne had also previously held this position.

The new appointment comes amid Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's decision (open in new tab) to step down from their royal duties and limit the use of their existing royal titles.
