Lana Condor Discusses "P.S. I Still Love You" and the Noah Centineo Scent

Valentine's Day comes early this year: "P.S. I Still Love You," the sequel to last year's Netflix hit romantic comedy "To All the Boys I've Loved Before" (opens in a new tab), is coming to streaming giant Netflix on February 12 The movie will be released on the streaming giant Netflix on Feb. 12. The film reunites some of our favorite characters, including Lara Jean (played by Lana Condor) and her sister Kitty (Anna Cathcart). Kitty reveals Lara Jean's love note, thereby setting the stage for Lara Jean and Peter Kavinsky's (Noah Centineo) throbbingly cute high school romance; in the second film, a man from Lara Jean's past, John Ambrose (Jordan Fisher) ), will test their relationship. John is handsome, like Peter, and presumably in love with Lara Jean (at least according to the information from the trailer).

So the big question is: who will Lara Jean choose? The book (there are three books; I'm not sure if you've read them all) fans already know the answer, but I'm waiting with anticipation for next week. I'm waiting for next week because I can foresee all the drama, heartache, and lessons about life and love that the sequel will bring. My hopes and fears for the film are shared by Lana Condor herself, whom I interviewed after being named Aerie's Role Model (opens in new tab). She laughs, "I believe [at least] two people will like the film."

For more on Condor's thoughts on the sequel, her Cinderella moment, and Noah Centineo's scent (yes, you read that right), keep reading.

Marie Claire: How was filming the second film different from the first?

Lana Condor: For the first film, we didn't know if anyone would come to see it or even buy it. We made it on a shoestring budget. What didn't change in the sequel was the love between the cast and the love for the story. What was different was that people would watch it. Because what we discussed as a creative team was that people don't like sequels. But if we could incorporate certain things into the second film that we know fans loved in the first film, and also keep in mind the audience for the book, I think we did a good job.

The second film is the middle (part) of the whole picture. You see Lara Jean grow up and you grow up with her. Part of growing up and finding your voice as a young woman is literally trial and error, we are not perfect. We are not perfect. I love this story and it is a big part of my life. Even if I wasn't in the movie, I would still believe in this story.

MC: What advice would you give to someone who is stuck in a love triangle?

LC: This is easier said than done, but you have to make the right decision for yourself, not what is right for the other person. You have to follow your heart and that is very difficult. [In "P.S. Still Love You,"] Lara Jean is in love with Peter, and she can't imagine being with another man. [The question is this. 'Who makes me laugh the most?' 'Who makes me grow up? My advice is to listen to your heart, listen to your gut a little bit, but mostly listen to your heart.

MC: Has Lara Jean's style influenced yours?

LC: Lara Jean is much more stylish than I am. Lara Jean is much more stylish than I am. I am much more casual in my everyday life. I wear [sweaters and leggings].

MC: In the trailer for the sequel, there is a scene where Lara Jean comes down the stairs in a gorgeous blue ball gown, can you tell us anything about that scene?

LC: What is important about that dress is that it is Lara Jean's "Cinderella moment." Because as I was standing at the top of the spiral staircase, it occurred to me that there had never been a Cinderella moment in any of my previous work.

Nor have I seen many Asian Cinderella moments. It's always the blonde, blue-eyed prom queen who does the big time. In Crazy Rich Asians, Constance Wu had a Cinderella moment walking among the lotuses. It made me think that one day I could do something like this too. [As I stood there, I wanted to cry because I knew my moment had finally arrived. That dress meant so much to me and to others, and not just because it was beautiful and fashionable. I absolutely did not want to take the dress off. I begged.

MC: What does Noa Centineo smell like?

LC: He is always clean. He loves candles, so whatever candles are around him now, that's what he smells like. He has a lot of candles in his trailer, in his dressing room, in his house. If you ever need to give him a gift, it's a good gift (opens in new tab). The candles he kept on the set smelled like barrels, rugged barrels.
