Seventeen years have passed since "How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days" (opens in new tab) made its brilliant debut, filled with ferns and Chinese Cresteds.

To review, the 2003 rom-com (opens in new tab) starred Kate Hudson (opens in new tab) and Matthew McConaughey (opens in new tab) as people who fall for a classic screwball comedy-style ruse. Kate played a magazine writer tasked with writing the titular how-to article, in which she actually picks up a guy and sends him away screaming within a week and a half. Matthew, on the other hand, played an advertising executive desperate to prove he had what it takes to sell to women and took a gamble that he could make any woman fall for him in the same ten days.

Aside from the obvious problems with the plot, while Kate does her best to become the craziest, most needy, and most detestable caricature of a woman imaginable, Matthew is determined not to lose this bet (and the big diamond account the winner will be leading) by not losing her and the laughter ensues as she refuses to sever her relationship with him.

It's a great time and a timeless classic of the rom-com genre (open in new tab), even nearly 20 years later You're not alone in your obsession with "How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days. In fact, the stars of the film are still soberly obsessed with it, too.

On Friday, Matthew McConaughey (opens in new tab) hilariously threw back at the film on its 17th anniversary on Instagram, sharing a photo of his and Kate's characters and the film's infamous "love fern."

"That damn fern," he captioned it, and also tagged his former co-star Kate Hudson (opens in new tab).

Kate replied almost immediately with an emoji of tears of joy:

and re-shared the photo with her own take on Ferngate: [15] [16] "That fucking fern...? That fucking fern? You let it die! ❤️," she wrote in capitals so that one could imagine her character, Andy Anderson, dramatically exclaiming. [because if so, I'd like to pre-order my tickets now.
